[Resolved] Default Bicycle (Default Gear)

Recently since the Strava app update around 6/8/2025, whenever I save a ride, my default bicycle is not being used even though when I check my gear it’s set to default bicycle. When I save my ride now it only gives me the option to select a new gear and doesn’t show my default bike and give me the option to select a different saved bike like it did in the past. Anybody know of a fix for this?  Everytime I save a ride now I have to go back in and edit my ride to select my bike. This is very annoying.

Do you record with the exact same sports type for which you set your bike as default?

Yes Ride. Both my bike says default as ride and when I select record it says Ride. Nothing on my end changed. This all started with the latest app update.

I think I figured out the problem. When you hit record there’s a message that initially says “GPS position acquired”. If u hit the arrow to start recording the ride then u get an error message after finishing ride and default bike isn’t shown. You have to wait for message “GPS position acquired” to change to “Ride” before you can hit the arrow to start recording. This is very confusing since the ride circle is checked below on the bottom line.

Interesting. I almost always start my rides with a long push on the app icon instead of actually opening the app. I will try your method later and see if I still have an issue. Thanks for the reply!

My new method seemed to work last night however it hasn’t worked since. I’ve tried to contact Strava technical support but nobody cares. I’m considering cancelling my membership that I pay $85/yr and going somewhere else. This app takes no responsibility for their app crashes and does not listen.

Any update on this issue that started on June 8th or so this year?  I use my iPhone to start and finish my rides and have been using it since 2020. I have never had a problem in the past. My friends who use bike computers to link into Strava aren’t having any issues but if you use the Strava app on your iPhone you get this issue. I signed in through my Google account and it does the same thing. I thought I found a fix but it’s not working. I’m technically very savvy and believe there’s a software issue on Strava end.  My new method seemed to work last night however it hasn’t worked since. Same here. No default bike saving since 6-8 June - last interface update. During saving activity I can’t even choose existing bike. There is only option to add new gear.

Yes that’s my problem. It’s so disappointing to be paying $85/yr for this level of garbage after a software update that wasn’t needed. Strava worked perfect before this change. Apparently nobody checked out the software change before it was forced onto its users.

I’m also having this same issue and so is my partner. I second the sentiment that for the cost of this app, there should be a solution for this and something from Strava indicating progress. It’s very annoying to save a ride, only to have to edit it every time to list the correct bike. It worked before the update, so it seems like an easy fix. Not sure why it’s taking so long to correct.

This has been happening me also, but only on my iPhone, not on my Android device. And it’s not just cycling. If I’m running or walking, I also lost my saved shoes. I’ve been having to work around this for weeks by saving my activity with no gear at all, then editing the activity and choosing the correct gear.

 

Oh wait! I just restarted my phone and did a test activity logging and the default is back!
