the latest lawsuit from Strava against Garmin is just another example of why I’m so glad I cancelled my Strava subscription 2 years ago. I don’t miss it and this latest lawsuit is why I continue to tell my friends who still have a subscription that they should cancel.
This is insane. Strava, if you cannot play nicely with others please get out of the sandbox.
Strava leadership continues to f*** itself.
Strava needs Garmin more than the other way around.
Seriously, Strava !?!? Why would you do that to your users? I don’t intend to renew my subscription if you keep that lawsuit.
I came here after watching the DC Rainmaker video about this to voice my opinion. I trust that Ray has given a fair overview of the situation and based upon that I am extremely frustrated at the shortsighted nature of the lawsuit.
I've been a subscriber for years, even though I do not value the premium features. To me, strava is simply a place to share my sessions friends and view my friends sessions. I've kept my subscription purely to support strava, since they're getting zero from my device purchases and I value their service.
This stinks of a company getting too big and employing some disastrous, power hungry executives who care more about their profits than the community that built them.
Please ditch this nonsense, Stava, before you lose your base. To me, my Garmin devices are essential and Strava is just a luxury optional extra that I'd happily ditch if my Garmin devices are impacted.
Dear Strava, do you really want to sue your data provider ? Most of the data you use is coming from Garmin, Wahoo and others. If we have to choose between our Garmin device or our Strava subscription, the choice is easy. What happens to you if you receive less data to exploit ?
We don’t know what Strava’s real intention is here. It most likely isn’t was the law suit demands (stop selling most Garmin devices). My guess is they would even be satisified with a minimal win because that could increase their stock value in the upcoming stock market launch. So it’s a gamble with the subscriber’s money with a high probability of backfiring and loosing prestige has started today.
More selfish behavior and attempted money grab by Strava. They got mad at Apple about paying the App Store Tax even though most people interact with Strava through the iPhone. They trashed the Developer API and targeted running coaches and coaching Apps so they can push Runna and get more paid subscribers. Now they are going to go after Garmin (and likely others) in an attempt to monetize user data and interface. CEO trying to drum up some good cash flow slides for IPO at the expense of users. Realizing I don’t need Strava anymore.
If this lawsuit results in my Garmin devices not being able to upload to Strava, I will be cancelling my subscription and deleting my account.
Even if the lawsuit is successful, you will still lose.
I will side with Garmin, everyone I know uses Strava mainly for the social aspect.
I am sick of Strava’s craziness. Whose data is it? The user’s data. Period. What is complicated about that?? I just cancelled my Strava subscription because of this and support Garmin fully. I will not be buying any Strava stock if their IPO goes through, although my opinion on that would’ve been different if it weren’t the the idiocy last fall compounding by this lawsuit.
So while I find the whole situation quite absurd too, it is interesting when one reads all the details, e.g. in this article by DC Rainmaker who was already mentioned earlier in this thread:
https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2025/10/strava-sues-garmin-demands-stop-selling-devices.html
… and Strava is actually arguing with the same - that the data is the users’ data, and that Garmin isn't playing cool. See the Strava CEO’s comments in the article update, copied from Reddit.
Which is by the way another thing that I find fascinating - Strava’s CEO (or someone using his social media account) regularly commenting major news at Reddit, but never actually joining the conversation here, at Strava’s very own discussion platform. // Edit to correct myself: this time it's the CPO, but it's the same principle...
I've never posted here before, but came here specifically to comment on this ridiculous lawsuit. Strava, I hope you're reading these comments and understand that, if forced to choose, I'll keep all my Garmin hardware and find another place to track my training. You're making yourself the villain and screwing with your customer base, again, to try to make more $. You should be tracking how many cancellations you receive over the course of this lawsuit, and any drop in new subscriber rate - I'm betting those numbers will see statistically significant changes!
I will drop Strava in a heartbeat if they inconvenience me and my Garmin in the slightest. I don’t think I’m alone, and I think they need to understand that.
If Garmin stops uploading to Strava, I’m dropping Strava, not buying a new watch.
This is absolute insanity on Stravas part.
The overwhelming majority of people I know who are into fitness and fitness tracking own a Garmin device and upload to Strava. I know more people who only own a Garmin device and don’t bother with Strava than I do people who only use Strava.
Strava, you do not supply recording devices such as watches, bike computers and the like. If you suddenly put some on the market, people who are used to years of reliable Garmin devices are not going to suddenly swap…. What is the play here? So many of the data uploads to your platform must come from Garmin devices. If this breaks the link between the 2 you can bet that the choice for many will be to drop Strava.

I can’t believe they think there is a choice between Garmin and Strava. Garmin is essential and Strava is merely nice. If Strava is truly foolish enough to force us to choose, it will be Garmin all day long.
I like how strava have said that the data is the users. Yep, and now I am keeping it contained to Garmin and myself. F U strava! I only have you as it's required for a few events that I participated in. Those events now use another platform. With your behavior towards Garmin (which is like a spoiled child throwing a tantrum) you have lost receiving my data for the foreseeable future.
I kind of have a feeling this lawsuit is going to hurt you more than it's worth.
Just want to add my frustration regarding Strava’s greed here! I love both Strava and Garmin. They go hand in hand. However, I don’t need my premium membership and if Strava continues this bs lawsuit, I’ll be cancelling my membership and urging my 400+ followers to do the same. Play nice Strava, cut the selfishness, power hungry, greedy nature from your executives or I believe you’ll lose a lot more than this lawsuit!
Another company going down the stupid track. It seems they do this over and over again. Stock holders should get a new CEO and management team before they absolutely tank their IPO, if it’s not too late at this point. Like most of the responses on here I too will cancel my subscription which I have had for years. I too think it’s a power and money grab they think will not get enough backlash to matter in the short term. Just a bad distasteful move and I think strava’s calculation is way off. I dont have to support this type of STUPID. You can’t fix STUPID!
I went ahead and cancelled my subscription. I can turn it on IF Strava’s inept C-Suite changes their minds.
Much of what Strava offers is available elsewhere after all.
Been with Garmin over 20 years. I have no problem living without Strava. They should drop their suit and learn to play with others.
I let my subscription lapse in the last year. Before then I was a yearly subscriber for over 10 years running. I was thinking about restarting my subscription but this move by Strava certainly makes me think otherwise. I don’t like companies that act like bullies. Strava will not get another cent from me until the suit against Garmin is withdrawn. On the other hand, now is my chance to support Garmin financially by spending money on a new Garmin Edge. Additionally, I will inform my circle of cycling friends about this bully move by Strava.
If forced to choose between my Garmins and Strava, I will pick the Garmins. Garmin had heat maps first and they haven't developed segments for at least a decade. Garmin users are the biggest block of paid subscribers, potentially alienating them prior to IPO is an interesting strategy. We'll see how it plays out
