I used the new AI-generated route generator on the mobile app (why wouldn’t this start on the normal route builder?).  After several attempts to get a route that seemed rational, the few resulting routes took me on very dangerous roads.  One had me on the main interstate the runs through my city.  The one I used recently was in a new are that I hadn’t explored yet (unfamiliar with the roads), so I gave it a try.  I really wanted this to work well.  In the end, the route had me ride on about 12 miles of very unsafe roads that were single lane, no shoulder, busy with traffic.  What I learned is that these routes should just not be trusted and only used in areas you’re already familiar with.  I think there are a few necessary features that are missing for “safe” route making to ever work properly.

  • Time of day of the sourced bike traffic:  Riding at 6AM on a specific road may end with a much different experience than riding at 10AM.  Trying to create routes for different times of the day might be a poor solution.  Having suggestions on other options within a current route might be better.  Real-time route suggestions.
  • There are many roads that should simply not be part of a route.  Allow crowd sourcing of “don’t ride here” roads, probably with some optional timeframes (great at 6AM, but not after 8AM.).

I really really really want this to work well.  Other opinions would be awesome, especially experiences with this new tool that maybe work much better (or worse yet) in different geographies.

Ciao @Rand. Totally agree with you. Related to the second point there is the following idea. You could add your vote.

Not the same thing.  Roads are segments on a map, not points.

Hey @Rand,

Thank you for providing this feedback within the Community Hub as we’ve shared your example with our product team.

I also recommend sharing your feedback within the app as well. If you scroll to the bottom of the suggested route's detail page, at the very bottom, you’ll see “How can we make this route better?”  Providing feedback via this link allows us to improve our route suggestions with specific details about why the particular route was not meeting expectations.
