On the web (using chrome on a desktop machine AND on a laptop), the search interface has been broken. If you click on the magnifying glass a field to enter the search text appears but it disappears before you get the chance to use is.

+1Excellent suggestion that I should have followed before posting here, in truth!
I found that switching off the half dozen extensions I had enabled made the otherwise consistently repeatable problem disappear. So then I tried to find what extension it was that caused the problem. The surprising result was that with exactly the same extensions re-enabled, the problem did not return.
I don’t understand exactly what happened here, but solving the problem is a result!
