I’m a club admin and I was excited when I saw this feature pop up on my phone - Score!  This will be useful!  And then I was disappointed.  The feature says “Get a snapshot of who attended, and use that info to grow your Club.”, but this is very misleading.  Here’s why:

  1. It uses as +/- 15 minute window from the event start time to find riders who joined.  That’s a HUGE mistake.  We often have 40+ people show up for rides and always allow 5-minutes grace period before starting, THEN we gather everyone together to provide ride information, THEN we organize into pace groups, etc.  Sometimes we manage this within 15-minutes of the official ride start time (really gathering time).  Sometimes we don’t.  The time window needs to be longer.  Alternatively, you need to let club administrators set the time window.  Or you need us to have a separate publicly listed start time (i.e., what is shown on the event RSVP) and an anticipated start time (e.g., 10 minutes later) that Club Admins can set behind the scenes.
  2. The feature certainly DOES NOT tell me “who attended” as claimed.  It only provides a count (which is really inaccurate) given the +/- 15 minute window mentioned above.  Our best information for how many people attended is our group photo at the ride start, but I would love to better be able to track who actually rode with us that day - and over time.  I know many of our riders by name and face, but certainly not all of them.  Especially for newer riders.
  3. I noticed that I can no longer change the event description after the ride has ended.  Why is that a problem? BECAUSE IT IS THE ONLY PLACE WE CAN PUT LINKS.  We like sharing photo albums from the ride after it is over, but unless you are a “verified club” you cannot post links in the Event Discussion or even in club posts.  The Event Description itself is the only place we can post a link.

Thus far, the only “insights” we’ve received are wildly incorrect ride attendance counts (even among people who posted their rides to Strava due to the +/- 15minute window) and loss of the ability to edit the Activity Description after the event is completed (i.e., the only place we can post a link - for instance to photos from the ride).

I would love for this feature to become useful to our club, but for the time being, it’s a swing and a miss.

Hi @Cyclo_Saurus, thank you for this detailed feedback around Club Event Insights! I’ve went ahead and taken note of this thread and have forwarded it over to the relevant team. If any other thoughts related to the feature come up, feel free to add them to this thread.

Thank you for forwarding it to the team!

Hi @Marya , thanks!  Things have improved a bit, which is encouraging.  It’s now a +/- 30 minute time window and the app shows a list of riders who attended.  Great!

However, it’s not possible to use the information provided to track attendance at club rides in any meaningful way.  Presumably that’s the point of the feature.  Why do I say that?

  1. The list of attendees only appears in the app and you cannot cut-and-paste the list elsewhere.  Nor can you export the list.
    1. It would be great to make the information available via the website - or at least offer the ability to export the list of attendees (e.g., to CSV file or something of the sort).  Or barring that, the ability to highlight text on the page, so we can cut-and-paste the list from the app.
  2. Trying to manually compare the list of Event RSVP against who showed up (based on Event Insights) is almost impossible if you have a large number of riders attending.
    1. The event page on the Strava website lists RSVPs in alphabetical order, but not really, because it bizarrely pushes lower case letters to the end (i.e., “adam” would appear after “Zack”.  Seriously?)
    2. The App shows RSVPs in order of RSVPing, but not really, because it separates the list into two sections: people you are following or not following.
    3. And the Event Insights list is in some entirely different order yet again.  Definitely not alphabetical.  Order of when the person posted their ride???

Bottom line: An improvement for sure, but still not in a format that can be easily used to track attendance at club events.  It’s just an image of information - not actually information - because there is no way to analyze the information within the app - or alternatively - let club leaders export the information so they can do their own analyses.

Club admins cannot say simple things like:  Total attendance at this years’ club events was 941, representing 163 unique riders. So, what exactly are we tracking over time with these Event Insights?  And what insights can we gain from data that is locked in the app, as an image, with zero actual analysis of the data possible within the app itself - or possible outside the app?

OVERALL: Fantastic idea (i.e., the ability of clubs to track rider attendance at events), but still a long way from providing the hoped for functionality.  I hope they keep working on it, because it would be useful.
