gpx file import to create route is creating a route that is 3 times too long

I am trying to create a route of the East Coast Greenway.  I go to that map tool and export a gpx file for a route that is roughly 442 miles long. When I upload that file into Strava it creates a route that is 1175 miles long, looping back to the start point and hitting the end point twice.  It also isn’t following the roads, it simply takes straight lines between 2 points.
