Question

Is there some problem building Segment leaderboards for new Segments today ?

I have created many new Segments in the last 7 years and I am quite familiar with the process.  Typically the leaderboards for new Segments are built in an hour or so and the process evidently involves scanning the most recent Activities first (if I am bored I might refresh the new leaderboard a few times to see it develop).

About 20 hours ago I created a new Segment.  When I look at the leaderboard just now I see only 54 entries (there should be about 300, because the new Segment is essentially the first half of a much longer Segment that has this many) and all the entries are after Oct 2023, suggesting the process is only about 15 % complete.

About 8 hours ago I created 3 more Segments.  When I looked just now these new Segments only have a few entries in their leaderboards and nothing before October 2025, suggesting the process is running at only a fraction of the usual speed.

Is this a known problem ?  When can we expect things to return to “normal” ?

Thanks in advance for your help in resolving this.

Hi @Ian11, I’ve seen a similar thread which seems to suggest that there might be a delay/problem:

@Ian11 Are your segments populated by now? One I have created yesterday was completed after 12 hours.

I think they are now complete - one took about 40 hours - much longer than the 2 to 4 hours I am used to.

Update - the generation of the leaderboards for new Segments still seems to be taking much longer than usual.  I created a couple of Segments on 6 Dec and the leaderboards were not completed until today (8 Dec), after 40 - 45 hours (it’s difficult to know exactly when a new leaderboard is completed).  It would be nice if the reason for the much longer creation times could be identified and the system reverted to the more usual times of 2 to 4 hours that I have become accustomed to.

Update - the problem seems to be getting worse.  A Segment I created on Tuesday (9 Dec) is still having the initial leaderboard created on Friday morning (12 Dec), 60 hours later.  Segment 40621609 had 906 names on it about 6 hours ago and there are now 991.  Does Strava track how long the Segment creation process takes ?  I’m sure it was only a couple of hours a few weeks ago.

I can confirm that populating segments still goes very very slowly, like 1 to 3 months of past activities are analyzed every 12 hours.

Update - I created 5 new Segments earlier today.  I checked them after about 6 hours and all had about the number of entries that I expected.  After a further 2 hours none of them had increased the number of names.  Hence it seems the problem of slow leaderboard population may have been resolved (a few days ago it was taking 70 to 80 hours).  I didn’t see any comments from Strava so I don’t know if they did anything to fix it.
