I’m trying to edit a new route and most (but not all) actions I try result in: “Error: Sorry, we couldn’t complete that action. Please try plotting the point again. This can occur when routing across large distances, so try plotting more frequent waypoints that are closer together.”

I’m only creating or dragging points a few blocks apart. This also happens when I try to delete a waypoint. The entire route is only 1-2 miles long. Looks like an API error, but status.strava.com says all is operational. Again, this is sporadic, but not a result of 100% of my actions.

edit: every action seems to be trying to calculate the resulting action from a point WAY far away. I’m in Oakland and editing a route in SF, but the calculation point is far to the west beyond both (see attachment). I even started a new route since the initial report, and this started in halfway through. Very frustrating to have basic route creating be this broken.

edit 2: the route had placed a finish point somewhere near Buffalo, NY. I never managed to click here myself. Once I deleted the hidden finish point, I was able to continue editing. What the heck..

Hi @albertbondigas,

I’m not 100% sure from your description but would you please check to confirm - does it look like a reoccurrence of the following issue?

It might be, but I don’t think so. The mouse cursor isn’t misaligned, in that when I click it tries to put a point where the cursor is, but can’t since the previous point somehow got placed 1000s of miles away.

Bug still persists, very annoying. Why does this take so long to be corrected

This would presume that Strava does know about the problem in the first place. With only two people in the world so far reporting it here it doesn’t seem widespread. Maybe you should file a support request.

Also facing the same issue editing routes

“Error: Sorry, we couldn’t complete that action. Please try plotting the point again. This can occur when routing across large distances, so try plotting more frequent waypoints that are closer together.”

Does include that that new waypoints appear far from where you placed them (the actual problem of this topic)?

This is sooo frustrating, especially when plotting slightly more complex routes in manual mode. If this error message doesn’t pop up, it’ll often just randomly plot a waypoint thousands of KMs away to the point it crashes. What was once and effortless task: plotting route, saving, uploading to watch, is now way faster in gpx.studio. Hope Strava don’t buy out that service and depreciate it...

I plot the route of pretty much every ride I do on Strava to upload on my garmin. Never really had this problem in years of doing so, but it has been constant in the past few days. I am plotting routes like I always have

I’m having the same issues trying to create a route. Been like it since last night.

I;m also having this issue, really annoying, because I wanted to make a route for tomorrows ride, and now I cant.

I have experienced this error frequently. Currently it prevents me from completing a map for any route. Once I receive the error, it cannot be cleared except by opening a new browser tab. It’s very clearly a bug.

Trying to do the same and getting the same … and it’s hugely frustrating / annoying: “Error: Sorry, we couldn’t complete that action. Please try plotting the point again. This can occur when routing across large distances, so try plotting more frequent waypoints that are closer together.” It will suddenly occur for no reason, and then the only way is to come out of the website and go back in and start over...

I have had this issue several days ago and am very surprised it hasn’t been solved yet. It doesn’t matter whether the distance between points are large or small. The error would pop up eventually and the most annoying thing is it would stuck there for quite a long time, which you couldn’t do anything like adding the point, deleting the point or even using the manual mode. This issue would be much more annoying when you need to adjust points for optimising the route. And you have to wait couple of minutes, sometimes short but sometimes long, the error just pop up again and again. I have issued the ticket but has not received any positive feedback yet. If this still last and Strava don’t do anything about it I have to cancel my subscription and have to use Komoot, as the route builder could not work with its basic functions. Really ridiculous.

I thought I’m the only one having this issue. It is very annoying! Even breaking the routing to smaller chunks, it still gives the error message. If not resolved, I will cancel my subscription.

Chiming in as well, I’m having this issue as are a few other mates.

Sometimes works a charm, but more often than not it kicks back the error below, and then I have to wipe the entire route and start fresh.

Error: Sorry, we couldn’t complete that action. Please try plotting the point again. This can occur when routing across large distances, so try plotting more frequent waypoints that are closer together.

Frustrating.

I do not click / auto-route over far distances, it has happened when trying to span sections of 0.1km to 0.5km...

Echoing what others have described, “You can start building a route but after maybe 10-20 waypoints all other waypoints just trigger an error message [Error: Sorry, we couldn’t complete that action. Please try plotting the point again. This can occur when routing across large distances, so try plotting more frequent waypoints that are closer together.]”. This needs to be fixed ASAP as it this renders the route builder useless for real-world route planning.

Having the same issues as everyone else the past few days. Route builder is functionally useless for me for anything with a lot of turns and navigation (so trail rides) or beyond maybe 30 miles on the road or gravel. Was hoping to avoid having to cancel and migrate over to RideWithGPS but this is absolutely unacceptable with no communication from the developers

I was just able to successfully create 2 routes, each of over 200 kms…so it looks like everything is working fine now.

For those still having this issue - I was using Adguard, which was blocking requests to some of the URLs used by Strava’s route builder. If you are using Adguard, add an exception for https://graphql.strava.com/  . This fixed the issue for me.

Hey Everyone,

I’ve just received word from our team that this issue should now be resolved.
If you haven’t done so already, please update your Strava to the latest version then close & reopen the app.

If you’re still having the issue, please submit a support ticket so our team can capture your examples and continue to investigate.

Thank you all for your patience during this process!

I don’t know what got fixed, but I just tried building a route with adblock paused in firefox and it failed with the same message everyone is getting. Then I tried in chrome and had the same issue.

This is failing for me again.  I use route builder a decent amount but it is 100% unusable for me now.  I can lay the first point down but I can’t even get it to lay down a second point without getting the can’t complete action error showing up.

I’m also having this issue in both Chrome and Firefox browsers, with and without ad blocking enabled. Initially today, I was able to give an explicit address for the start and finish locations and was able to add a few route points along the route, but now I can’t.

Same issue here, I just cannot plot any route! Very frustrating when you are on a holiday :-(

Same deal here - I cannot add any more waypoints.  I immediately get that awful red box (** Devs - please move this off the map real estate **)...
