Hi there

Strava is awesome - nothing to add to that.

However, I have certain security and privacy concerns with regards to the combination of location information (track) and the timing of said recorded track. The location information is an integral part of Strava and I feel that security and privacy concerns are appropriately addressed. I struggle with the time stamp of the activity though. Everybody who has access to my activity can see WHEN I move WHERE. Many people tend to do the favorite routes they do at similar times of the day (before work, lunch time, after work, etc.). It would be awesome to not just have a privacy filter around the start and end location of a run, but also around the start time. For example: no exact time stamp but only the date.

In short: remove the threat that runner X is passing by the dark corner of the park every evening at 8:42 pm.

Thank you. Happy to hear other voices on the topic.

Hello @Benwoo

Thanks for posting about this, we appreciate you taking the time to provide your feedback.  We do want to clarify how this works currently:

Only your followers on Strava can see your start time on activity feed entries and the activity details page. This is true even on activities set to “Everyone.”

Here's some other helpful tips, some of which you've noted already:

  • Map visibility controls are a way to hide certain portions of the map from other members. Hide an address or the start/end by default. You can also hide the entire map. More info here.

  • Profile settings allow you to control who can see your profile details, which means that if someone doesn’t follow you they won’t see your activity history shown below. More info here.

  • Activity controls allow you to make an activity visible to everyone, followers, or only you. You may be interested in adjusting your more routine activities to followers or only you. More info.

  • For more information on all of our privacy controls, please visit our privacy center and take the time to ensure your selections in Strava represent your intended experience.

Lastly, we have an existing feature suggestion related to this topic.  Please check it out and we would welcome your vote (kudos) and any additional comments you have.

Thanks again for joining the conversation on the Community Hub and we hope to hear more from you.

There is an existing Idea requesting this. Please make sure to vote on it.

The good news is that start times are now hidden from non-followers, whereas they used to be visible to everyone. If safety/privacy is your utmost concern, you may make your activities Followers Only and vet who follows you (with the tradeoff that you would not be eligible for segment competition).
