Question

Why does Strava route planning not offer multiple routes or different out and back route options?

Is there an easy way to get Strava to suggest multiple routes between points A and B? Between two points there are always multiple ways to get from A to B, some being easier than others, either longer, shorter, more or less elevation, surface conditions (offroad to gravel to road) etc etc. It would be good to see the choice. Strava doesnt give any options. With options, this would allow creating a route with a different inbound route to the outward route.

Strongly agree. Even as a Premium user, there’s currently no easy way to compare multiple routes between points A and B, so I often have to leave Strava to plan a route that bests suits my needs. Particularly when I am trying to build training into my active commute.

For example, In hilly places, there are usually several genuinely different options between the same two points — shorter but steeper routes (sometimes with stairs), longer routes with gentler climbs, or trail-based alternatives. Which one makes sense depends on training goals, fatigue, or conditions. There are often large variances in distance to get between the same two points, and some trails I just wouldn’t do in the dark as I wouldn’t feel safe, but are perfect during the day, which is why choice is important.

It would be hugely valuable if Strava could:

  • allow you to choose an start poibt A, end point B and then suggest multiple distinct A→B routes,
  • allow users to request more alternatives if the first set doesn’t suit, and
  • optionally set a target distance or distance range.
  • support filtering by elevation, surface type, or stair avoidance.

This would also make it much easier to create routes with different outbound and inbound paths and feels like a natural extension of Strava’s existing routing tools.
