Following this thread, it’s currently nearing 1000 upvotes, but it seems to be in a “not planned” status. Is this potentially going to be added, or does the status mean it’s been discarded?

@traug I can totally feel you, it's quite frustrating, after all I’m a longtime Strava user too and would love to see some additions to the app, including new activity types. Anyway - fingers crossed!

Hi @traug, this is a community forum, users like yourself advising each other about Strava. Only the product managers from Strava could answer your question but unfortunately, they don't visit/participate in this forum (we’ve asked many times but no joy). In general, as far as I know they decided that they wouldn't add new activity types in the foreseeable future. So unless the product management change their minds, we won't see any new activity types any time soon… 🤷‍♀️

@Jana_S Thanks so much for explaining! Apologies for the negative tone of my original post. 😬 I’ll keep logging padel sessions as “other” until the Strava PMs decide to add it 👍

Would Padel players be interested in moving to another platform away from Strava? That is the question. Because Strava acts like their invincible, but are they? Time to test? And don’t ask, which platform. Just answer the question. Because a new platform can always arise quickly if there is enough interest.

Yes there is the Padelio app which integrates with smartphone health loggers and which also can analyze games & keep score. I wouldn’t feel the need to switch to that if Strava just included Padel as an activity. I mean is Pickleball really even an activity? You just stand around. Padel is a workout.

I wouldn’t feel the need either, but looking at how long ago the first request was made and the fact that Strava just doesn’t react to it at all gives me the feeling it will never happen. And to be honest, i’m not suprised, the bigger companies get the less they seem to remember that their consumers are paying their bills.

Actually they have reacted but it’s difficult to find. It’s in the following comment: https://communityhub.strava.com/ideas/add-activity-type-padel-6570/index9.html?postid=23473#post23473

More then a year ago. And last december I’ve send them an email asking for the feature. They responded with a very long reply to go to the community… I responded that that does not solve my issue and the next response was a generic I’ll pass your feedback on.
So, nothing. I’m not going to wait.

This is my though:
The Reality.
Padel is the fastest-growing racket sport globally. It is no longer an emerging trend; it is a permanent fixture of the global athletic landscape.

The Omission.
Strava aims to be the "Center of the Active World." Currently, it is not. By excluding Padel, Strava ignores millions of high-intensity efforts, social athletic interactions, and data points that define modern fitness.

The Necessity.

Growth. Year-on-year participation in Padel exceeds all other racket sports.

Data. The cardiovascular load of a Padel match is measurable, significant, and distinct from tennis or squash.

Retention. Users are currently forced to mislabel Padel activities as "Workout" or "Tennis." This degrades data integrity.

The Action.
Integrate Padel into the activity list immediately. It is not a matter of "if" the sport belongs on the platform, but how much longer Strava chooses to remain incomplete.

The Conclusion.
Maintain the standard. Close the gap. Add Padel.

But Strava just does not care anymore.

Well it's not about padel, it's that Strava isn't adding any new activity types. Including those actually popular globally (I mean no offense, but realistically, padel seems to be rather a regional thing - to be honest, I’ve never heard of it outside of these discussion threads, let alone knowing someone actually playing it.) Of course, it's frustrating when Strava lacks some features that we users would like, and it would be nice to see things getting implemented. But for a bigger picture, have a look at the list of ideas, there's so many that people ask for.

And I have never heard about:

  • Backcountry Ski
  • Pickleball
  • Elliptical
  • Racquetball

Yet they are a Strava sports type.
It’s not about who heard about what, it’s a money game. Strava is just another commercial company, so they should just use a number driven decision model. Or at least look at what is requested a lot. But like I said before a lot of commercial companies have a turning point, when they become a market leader or slightly after. Then they just stop caring.
