Hi there Strava. My na is Mikołaj and I'm a Strava subscriber. I would like to share with you an idea for the new Strava feature.

I Was thinking, that it would be interesting on many levels, if you could create bike catalogue, that users could pick from to show on what bike they are riding. I am aware of the fact, that you can name e gear you are using. But the feature I am thinking of goes one step further. It would allow to create classifications, for example which bike has the most of road KOMs, which has the most mtb KOMs etc. It would also enalble to create classifications of which bikes are used to sprint, which are used to ride long distances, which are most popular onroad, which offroad. And why not go another step further? You are surely aware of wheel fetish that many riders have 🙂 why not create similar wheel catalogue? Or runners gear?

Catalogues like this exists for example in automotive industry. While searching for tyres, you pick the car you are riding and the systems gives you right tyres. Why not do the similar with bikes and riders on Strava? Think about all the new data you could use (and sell), the new commercialistion possibilities. And ofcourse the user satsifaction or guidence while buying a bike.

Anyway. It's just an idea I wanted to share. Perhaps I am not the first one that thought abou it 😉

Best,
MJ

Hello @Mikolajjj thanks for your contribution. I am not sure I entirely understand your vision about this "bike catalogue". Is there a specific area in the product you think this could fit into? Could this be an opportunity to start a discussion or an article and talk about bicycles/wheels (perhaps even within this Community Hub)? How do you think we could best implement this on Strava? I'm asking this because it's not entirely clear and in order to open this idea up for voting, I feel we're missing some key information to turn this into an easy-to-understand idea. Thank you!

Hey Soren.

What I meant by bike catalogue is some form of standarization of a bike one is using. Instead of writing it down by hand, one would pick it up from the list. This would allow to create classification charts for the bike models and makes. For example which bike has the most KOMs on road, or which bike is used to ride long distances. You could also use it to measure popularity of a brand in different areas of the world. If there were such a chart, a person who is planning to buy a bike but doesn't have a clue which model to pick up, could use Strava to check which models are most popular in the area of cycling that she or he is intereted in.

Thanks for clarifying that!

Just my 2 cents, but this seems like an awfully complex feature, and one that really is more aligned with a bike review site than an activity tracking/social site.

When I'm looking for a new bike (or component), I use bike review sites/forums to find the best parts - they contain write-ups and details on the conditions they are tested in, along with costs and skill level.  I feel that having this in Strava would be a distraction.

I would like to search for bikes that my followers/friends ride. I am looking to buy a new bike and it would be really cool if I could search to see if anyone rides the one I am leaning towards so I could ask them questions about their experiences with the bike.

 Hello.

We wanted to let you know that your idea submission regarding implementation of a bike catalogue from August of 2022 will be archived. While this idea is interesting, we don’t have any immediate plans to implement this and currently aren’t able to prioritize this idea.

Please note that your feedback is valuable to Strava. As stated in our Community Idea Guidelines, we receive many idea submissions each week, and realistically, there may be various reasons that prevent us from including an idea on our Product Roadmap.

We want to thank you for taking the time to submit your idea and we look forward to your continued contributions to the Strava Community.
