It's 2022 and most apps have Dark Mode nowadays. It might be a bit weird to use Strava when not working out... But looking at the segments the night before to plan out the next run is a thing. Please make us literally lose less sleep when doing this, or when recording an activity in the evening.

This has consistently been the top request on reddit.com/r/strava

That's interesting about the new Strava CEO liking a joke about dark mode for Strava. Funny/sad to see that this is now the second most liked feature request (after adding Ukrainian support), with over 800 likes and 135 comments. Why does Strava even have this forum if they are going to ignore it?

That's because Strava is the least community-oriented tech company out there.
They're truly blessed with vocal, patient, active and supportive userbase all around the world, but chose to listen to their room temperature IQ inbred PMs over overwhelming customer feedback. The fact that they disabled comments under Strava Club announcements (after those were taken over by requests for Dark Mode) is a great sign of bad leadership and product direction.

The fact that they launched messaging—a creepy feature that nobody ever asked for over widely demanded and legitimately useful dark mode is just mind-boggling.

I really hope the new CEO would change their approach to feature roadmap and clean up all the nasty growth-hacking noise that started flowing in the app, but I have very low hopes given Michael Martin is coming straight from YouTube, one of the most PM-driven organizations out there that made using their product feel like dumpster diving. Never wanted to be proven wrong so bad, but for now I canceled my Strava renewal in January.

From the view of a software engineer, there is really not much to do. It could be done in one to two weeks:

  1. replace white background with black (for the sake of saving time just keep the orange)
  2. replace all black text with white color
  3. add a toggle button the the settings
  4. upload to app store
  5. then handle the special cases, e.g. background of maps, etc.

I will post from now on every day an Instragram Story and will tag Strava official account that I am sick of not adding a dark mode! It is so easy to implement and the community has been begging for years.

For web, there are a lot of extensions already, to switch to dark mode on all websites, the one I use: Dark Reader.

Have a good one everyone!

2024.........new Strava CEO.

Michael Martin

And the burning question is?

Is he dark-mode capable?

😉

That really is the burning question!

Common Michael Martin, do yourself and the community a favour!

Try getting up at 5am and check training stats for one month. Dark mode will be implemented in a few days.

@drewjosh I agree, I am also a web developer who has built app UIs, and this would not be that hard to implement. I got a quad lock for Christmas (I know, I’m a bit behind), and the white screen on rides is power intensive and distracting when riding in the dark.

I don't know if it’s been mentioned, but an easy fix on iPhone is Settings > Display and Text > Smart Invert. It turns the Strava activity screen black. Works great and isn’t too hard to switch on and off.

Thanks @drewjosh.........glad to hear that iphone can force dark mode for Strava. Unfortunately the dark mode settings on Android have no effect on Strava.

@JHBStrava it was the idea of @sixthreethree

For iOS 17.1.2 the setting is here:

Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Smart Invert

Easiest way to access is to just search “Smart invert” in settings screen.

While it does work ( thanks @sixthreethree !) it does have some weird effects on other apps, so I don’t recommend it to have it always activated. If you use Strava to record an activity while riding in the dark, this is a really good idea!

i just think it would be great for strava to have a dark theme that corresponds with the systems theme. i love the app and everything about it but personally, it sometimes hurts my eyes because strava is so bright in comparison to all my other applications.

thank you, i hope this can be implemented soon

Can't believe this is still not a thing in 2024. It's really not that hard to implement provided you have a well architected app.

Hurry up and make dark feature a thing before I cancel my subscription

I cancelled at least six months ago. I then received a survey, which I completed. I told them to implement dark mode and give me a way to toggle off all the challenges that keep filling up my feed. With those two simple things I'd re-join. Sadly, they don't care what their customers actually want. They keep implementing "features" that who knows who actually wants them. However, in app messaging is pretty handy, as is adding video.
