It would be nice to allow for editing the mention name so we can choose to

  • have both first name and last name as of today (@John Doe)
  • remove the last name in order to keep the first name only (@John)

This is available on some apps today like MS Teams and work as this :

  • start by typing @ and that will trigger an autocomplete with names like today
  • when you select a name the text is completed and full name mentioned put in bold
  • if you press backspace to delete, first the last name is removed and not the whole name/mention as of today
  • to fully delete the mention, press backspace again to remove the remaining first name

Why ?

  • It always feels weird to be mentioned with full first and last name, especially when someone replies in a comment thread.

Some platforms also allow us to delete the first name and leave the last name, either by 1) moving the cursor after the first name before hitting ⌫ Backspace; or 2) by moving the cursor before the first name then hitting ⌦ Delete. Some of us actually refer to some friends by their last name for various reasons, not least of which because we may know 20 Johns or Michaels.

Hello. We wanted to let you know that your idea submission from last year will be archived. While this idea is interesting, we don’t have any immediate plans to implement this and currently aren’t able to prioritize this idea.
