I have been using Strava to record section hikes I have been doing on the North Carolina Mountains to Sea Trail. The heatmap in particular has been useful to me in seeing what I have done so far and what sections still remain.
I have run into the problem, however, that the heatmap amplifies the disconnect between barely disconnected trail sections I have done when I zoom out on the map. For instance, if one day I hiked to a parking lot on the trail and recorded that as one activity, and then the next day hiked from that parking lot to somewhere further down the trail and recorded that as a second activity, if there is not complete overlap in exactly where I started and stopped in the parking lot then the heatmap makes it appear as if there are many miles separating the two activities (at least in a zoomed out view). See photos below for what I mean. Would it be possible to fix this? The most intuitive way for this map to visualize what I have done would do the opposite, I would think: upon zooming out small disconnects would be smoothed away into a continuous line. Any chance the heatmap could be changed in this way? I imagine that other people who use Strava to keep track of long-term section hikes would also appreciate this. Even just psychologically it would be nice to see a long continuous line all across NC now that I’ve done 700+ miles on the trail! All the little disconnects are bad for morale!
