Looking at my power curve this evening I noticed that my “All of 2024” line exceeded the Custom Date Range line I had set for all of my cycling years (side note, I’d really like an “All Time” option in the dropdown menu so I don’t have to create custom date ranges every time I want to see my all time bests). This was telling me that in 2024 I actually exceeded my all time best power for certain time durations.
At face value this makes no sense, as any efforts in 2024 should have counted towards my all time bests. I was viewing the chart in Watts. When I toggled the curve to display in “Watts/KG, the lines converged, and I saw what (I think) was happening: due to weight gain over the years, my maximum w/kg for those specific time durations were set back in 2016, while my raw power over the same time durations was set in 2024.
I do not accept that it is correct to only use the best w/kg efforts when building the power curve and then have the toggle button simply convert that single curve into watts, especially when the toggle defaults to “Watts”. To me it makes the most sense that there should actually be two separate curves built, one for your best raw power efforts, and one for your best w/kg efforts. To that point, this calls into question whether the raw power numbers shown in the “Best Efforts” section of the app/website are actually best w/kg numbers (i.e. they should match the numbers in the power curve section) or whether they (like the power curve section) only reflect best w/kg efforts. I am not sure.
Why this matters: I may never be as lightweight as I was years ago, and I’d like to be able to see my power curve improve as my raw power actually improves, rather than being forever frozen in time at my best w/kg efforts when I weighed a lot less. Ideally the curve should update with the appropriate data when you toggle the button from “Watts” to “Watts/KG”, not simply convert a single curve. The line for a subset of dates should never exceed the line for a larger encompassing range of dates.
Questions for the community: should this be a bug report or a feature request? Is there something I am missing here?
