What to Expect as FATMAP Transitions to Strava

Not always the case.
I'm a MTB enthusiast and used Fatmap (and other platforms) when planning my off-road tours.
It was very useful to check the slopes of the mountainsides to validate the routes.
It was extremely useful during the tours to evaluate route changes and ride safely as well.

I'm afraid they can't do that. They need to keep their jobs.

I am hopeful. Of course, not in Strava—the acquisition happened in January 2023, meaning it will be two years coming into this winter season and they managed to implement ZERO useful features. But I am hopeful in other teams working day and night to provide people with tools that make our life in the mountains easier—Contours, 3D Reality Maps, Relief Maps, and others. Give them a try; a lot of them saw what happened with FATMAP and are jumping on the opportunity.

I will leave with a personal anecdote. Having lived in SF, I personally know some people who are working or have worked at Strava. In my opinion, the company is not exactly a bastion of product innovation, and the culture seems allergic to the idea of rapid and effective product development. Take, for instance, their recent "big" feature: the ability to hide start times. Groundbreaking, right? But hey, what do you expect from a place where employees have unlimited PTO? While it might be a dream to work at Strava, being a customer is a whole different story.

There's a saying, "innovate or die," and if Strava doesn't pick up the pace, they might find themselves closer to the latter.

No way, no answer.
They have no intention of giving answers.
They simply delete the most inconvenient posts.

By way of feedback, I subscribed to Strava Premium predominantly for the access to Fatmap features (in particular offline mapping in different formats, gradient/ avalanche overlays and user ski route content). It is good to hear that the plan is to migrate most of these features to Strava, but few have made it so far.

I don't really understand why the decision has been taken to end Fatmap before giving yourselves the time complete the migration but, in case it is not obvious, without these features users like myself are going to have to seek alternative services to fill this gap which, for me at least, then throws into question the value of my Strava subscription.

Overall I'm a big fan of Strava - there are some quirks but your mapping (and heat mapping) is excellent and it is great to keep all my route planning / outing logging in one place so please hurry in your migration and be clear/upfront about any features that are not going to be migrated across.

The backcountry skiing community is very loyal to the tools we use. There is just over a month left before the snow season starts in the Northern Hemisphere, and if users like me have to look for an alternative to FatMap for this snow season, I doubt we will return to Strava later. I have been a long-time subscriber to both Strava and FatMap, but now due to Strava's silence, I am starting to consider migrating to Gaia GPS or Caltopo... I hope Strava provides some brief information, as the climbing and backcountry skiing community deserves respect.
Cheers.

Dear Community,

I am an ex-user of FATMAP. My beloved planning tool has now supposedly been integrated in Strava. However, I cannot find the FATMAP map anywhere, nor all the other features.

Do you know when the FATMAP features are going to be available on Strava?

Thank you very much in advance!

Best,

Luca

I wonder what motivation there is amongst the orphans to reproduce FATMAP ourselves? I would be sure the skills exist and that organisation would be needed, but I suspect it is not impossible.

Boo Strava.. Fatmap was such a great tool. RIP. Strava you suck.

Hi, @lukesilver
Believe me, the answer is simply "never".
This because FatMap and Strava have too different scopes, and integrating FatMap into Strava have no sense.

Shame on you for removing one of the best apps ever created. You promised to integrate FATMAP's features into Strava but have blatantly failed to deliver on that promise.

Why are some posts getting deleted? You've deleted FATMAP before building several important features into the Strava maps which kept people safe, and now when people recommend alternatives you delete their posts?

Don’t worry, those deleted posts will also be migrated to the new Strava with all the FATMAP features… 🤣

Zero chance of that ever happening

I just went to check your strava app... There is almost nothing of what we love about fatmat that has been migrated... Why shut it down now? I feel so sad to lose my fatmap companion for hiking today ! I think most fatmap users will like me just be disgusted and not at all move to your app.

Shame

Totally agree with all the Fatmap comments - the main reason I subscribed to Strave was to keep the Fatmap maps and features.  Perhaps Strava would care to update us as to why the promised Fatmap intergration has not happened...?

I have to say I don't see that - FatMAP was very much an extension of Strava functions for me around planning/tracking/reviewing outdoor adventures. FatMAP brought much more navigation / mountain functionality to the table, but I used both for planning running / hiking / cycling and skiing activities. I have to say I'm genuinely confused about why Strava acquired FatMAP at this point. I assumed that the point of that acquisition was to gain access to those features. I don't really see what the benefit is to them in them just binning it.

The loss of FATMAP has led to me having to pay a more expensive subscription to Strava.  However, the promise of a transition to FATMAP features in Strava is not happening.  The main items I have used extensively in the past and find most helpful are navigation and mountain-user features such as National topographic map layers for UK and EU countries, avalanche forecast, and slope angle/aspect layers, as well as waypoints.  There is no sign of any of these yet - do you have an expected date for the return of these?

Many thanks,

Matt

The frustration runs high in Fatmap users who are already gutted to have seen their app swollen by strava. But why is the latter completely silent and not answering to any of the previous thread about fatmap’s integration? Will a mod ever let the community know what’s up? Did strava spent all that money just to kill the app?

Thank you, Strava, you made it really easy for me. Those €49.99 a year will now go to GaiaGPS.
I had my doubts, but given your total disregard for the Fatmap and backcountry ski community, you’ve made the decision very easy. Thank you again.

If you kill the competence, you don’t have to improve anything. Money talks. Well played, Strava… well played.

So here I am (out of the loop apparently) ready to start planning my yearly trip, type in www.fatmap.com and boom, nothing. I go to Strava and search the app and web version and none of the features that made it useful for backcountry skiing are there.

I really don't understand what the leadership at Strava is doing right now. Y'all need re-evaluate what made you popular, restricting the API usage and this are both HUGE missteps. After nearly a decade of loyalty and the pain to think about all the recorded activities to lose, I find myself researching replacement apps.

This has been the death of one of the greatest tools for backcountry skiing/touring. What a shame.
