[KNOWN ISSUE] Issues with Apple Watch and Strava closing mid-workout

Forum|alt.badge.img+1

Hi all,

Reported this to Strava a couple of weeks ago and had no response… so thought I’d try here.

Recently, when I record a Weight Training or Workout activity using my Apple Watch, during the session Strava will close randomly and sometimes restart the timer back to the beginning or at least knock a few minutes off. However, when I save the session, most of the time it records the full session (other times knocks a few minutes off). Anyone else experiencing this issue?

UPDATE FROM STRAVA:

Hello and thanks to everyone who has posted about this.

We’re in the process of investigating and I will post an update here when I have one.

In the meantime, I recommend using the workaround suggested by @Jana_S - use the native Workout app on AW and sync the activity to Strava once finished.

Sincere apologies for the issue and we ask for your patience while we look into this.

Yes!

It's doing it on my new Galaxy 7 watch.

I came away from Strava and thought I'd try it again and still problematic

Samsung Health is bullet proof so will go back to that.

Same issue, started a few weeks ago. Watch and iphone on latest software versions. Wiped out Apple WatchOS and all settings, reloaded. Rebooted phone. Still not working. I’m looking forward to the the Strava engineering and product teams pushing a fix for this.

Having the same issue, Apple Watch. Uninstalled the app on my watch and re-installed, still an issue. Frustrating mid  spin session and find the app is closed. Sometimes it resumes, sometimes it starts again. Watch OS 11.1

Same issue here with my Apple Series 6 watch… started about 3 weeks ago. Currently, I can guarantee that if I look at my watch 10 or 15 minutes into a workout, I will see my normal watch face and have to manually jump back over to Strava where I will see the time starting over as if it’s a new workout. Looking forward to a solution soon.

Same thing — it’ll randomly restart mid-workout, though it only seems to do it when I’m climbing. It hasn’t happened during other activities, and it only started a few weeks ago.

Same issue.  One time it closed and killed half my workout.  Most times when I save it cuts out several minutes of my workout and the HR data is missing chunks.

Same issue here, really frustrating. Has anyone found a fix or workaround yet?
Any news from Strava team?

Same here, apple fitness activity not found on Strava app even though they’ve been connected.

Same issue. It’s super frustrating only started a few days ago, if I don’t keep looking at the watching bringing it out of sleep mode it exits the strava watch application leading to it either restarting or not recording the full workout (loosing minutes). Its been happening for indoor running, hoping there's an update or fix soon.

Workaround - use the native Workout app on AW and sync the activity to Strava once finished. The disadvantage is the lack of live segments but other than that, I actually find this better (I can create advanced custom workouts, set audio alerts for pace/HR/power/cadence ranges as well as for laps/intervals, use the track detection feature etc).

I wish I could. I have tattooed arms and the native workout app pauses after 10s because it wont detect my wrist.

I don’t know why this has been marked as resolved, I still haven’t heard anything from Strava, very poor customer service.

The workaround I have found and seems to be working for the last week or so is to put the Apple Watch into Low Power Mode prior to recording the activity. Once finished, feel free to take out of Low Power Mode.

Hi all.

For some reason, my Apple Watch has stopped syncing properly while on the treadmill and then stops recording all together without me knowing.

So i’m running, say 5k, I check my watch and it’s turned off the Strava app.

My splits are showing weird times as well.

It was absolutely fine for the last couple of years until the last two weeks.

In those two weeks, I’ve upgraded my watch and still the same problem.

I know it shouldn’t but it’s getting on my **** and it’s ruining my runs!!

I watch Netflix while I run so I have my phone with me and it’s never been a problem before.

Please help.

Cheers x

I have been having the same issue!!! Glad it’s not just me. Been like this for roughly two weeks.

I will try Jane’s suggestion using the native workout app.

Seeing the same thing behavior with Indoor Run workouts — very frustrating.  Elapsed time continues but pace drops to zero and messes up avg pace for workout.  Have tried all sorts of things without success including locking screen with water lock, enabling/disabling auto pause, killing all other runnings apps on the watch.  Come on, Strava team!  Counting on you to get this fixed quickly.

I think I’m having the same issue. Recently, on my Apple Watch Series 6, I’ll start an activity such as Crossfit and throughout the workout the app does not stay in the foreground and disappears. When I switch back to it, the time updates and when I eventually stop the workout at say 1 hour, the uploaded duration is always shorter.

Today my 1 hour 2 minute workout (as shown on the watch when I stopped it) uploaded and registered as 37 minutes. It seem to cut off the last ~20 mins of the workout. This keeps happening almost everyday now.

Come on Strava, sort this out! It’s been almost 3 weeks and no fix. It’s not like it’s a minor bug - this is a huge issue. You know the update that broke it; please just do what any other developer does and reverse the changes with an update while you work on the fix in the background.

Suggesting your paying customers use a competitors’ app makes people question why they use Strava at all. Not a good look.

Same problem here. Sometimes it will still save the workout but tonight it didn’t save anything. So frustrating!

Same issue here. Past two weeks. Been trying to change my workout routines and getting up for 5am workouts for once.  Consistent two weeks of doing it and half my workouts get broken… 😞 Hope there is a solve soon.

Same issue here- happens with CrossFit activity. Strava seems to restart the workout (but when finished it has recorded the elapsed time correctly) and only records my HR maybe 5 times during an hour. Noticed about 1 week ago on my Apple Watch, very frustrating

This issue has started on my Apple Watch. During a long run, watch quits, goes balck, will not re open. When I do get it open, it says “Battery Low”, even though I have a full charge. Are developers aware of Apple Watch issues? Is there a remedy in the works? Keep me posted….

Same problem here with Apple Watch and Strava app. Last 2 weeks my Weight Training activities are getting g cut by a third of the time. Apple Watch still recognizes I moved for the entire time I worked out but Strava is cutting off time when the workout is finished. Funny thing is, before I select finish in the Strava App on my watch, the proper elapsed time is shown. As soon as the workout is synced it losses time. Very annoying, especially after all of Strava’s recent issues with limiting 3rd party use of data. Disappointing.

Same here. Strava app closes (or goes to background?) during workout. If you bring it up again, time shows as from beginning, but heart rate not recorded during this time.
