What have you done to Heatmaps? I do not care about businesses, or where other people have run, walked, or biked, and the new color selection interface does not allow basemap changes from the same interface (as it should). Also, as I zoom out, the once-useful aggregation of workouts (showing a circle and number at scales where the actual paths get tiny and useless) is now gone. Writing this as a cartographer, recent changes are not an improvement. Is there a way to recover the old display mode?
Exactly! I got to this forum only for this reason and I'm glad someone else has brought this up! We want the old way where we could see the bubbles when map was zoomed out! It was such a great thing to be able to see all the places I ran in, and the main reason I paid for Strava, everything else that I nees for training is in Garmin, and honestly just to have access to segments is not going to be enough for me to justify paying subscription fees! Please bring it back and sooner rather than later
I miss the clusters in the old personal heat map (pre update) for two key reasons:
- It helped me find activities in other geographies from years ago
- I really enjoyed zooming out and seeing all the clusters of activities from all the places I had been - this feature definitely helped keep me active on vacations for the joy of adding a new cluster to the globe on my heat map.
+1 to brining back the activity clusters. It was probably my favorite Premium feature - sad we lost it.
Please bring back the old Heatmaps with Activity Clusters!

UPDATE FROM STRAVA
Hello everyone. Thanks for writing in. Nick from the Strava Web team here. We really appreciate you taking the time to write up this feedback! We took out the clusters because we were not satisfied with their ability to get us to the activities we were looking for and have begun the process of replacing them with something better. If you take a look at your Personal Heatmap today, you should see the option to use clusters of photos from activities as a means of getting back to the original activities that underly the heatmap. This is the first in a planned series of updates to replace the clusters with something more useful. We know it's not perfect yet. Please let us know how this looks! Again, really appreciate the feedback and are reading every comment.
They added photos to the heatmap options today. But the activity clusters are still missing. Hope they add it back on soon.
Pictures are ok for those, who actually take them, I just had a look and I only have about 15, that's not good enough, but they said they are working on something better than we had before, so fingers crossed, I'm looking forward to be able to see where I ran when the map is zoomed out...
Thank you, photos may please those that acutally take them while exercising, I do very occasionally when on holiday in new place, but rarely post them on Strava, this is a training tool for me and being able to see where I ran is a cherry on top, unfortunately at the moment I can't see the heatmaps when zoomed out and it's not a good thing, please bring back the old clusters the way they were, I don't think you can make something more useful than that, or at least give us an option to toggle them on. Thank you!
Hi Nicky. The activity clusters were perfect in my opinion. Hope you bring them back. The new photo/photo option is great addition! Thx!
Photos are nice, and thanks. But most people don't take them for most activities. And I'm looking forward to the further changes you mentioned. But keep in mind that cartographically speaking, "fancy" is not your friend. It will be hard to beat a simple symbol with a number inside it to indicate the number of activities in a place when zoomed out far enough that the actual paths look like a dot, or a little knot. Gosh, that sounds like an activity cluster! There may be more cool features for you to add, but for that purpose I really think you could stop looking for a better solution.
In my scenario the activity clusters were perfect: I do the activities on the Tacx indoor trainer and upload them to Strava automatically using Garmin connect. I don't see an easy way to use photos in my process. Without activity clusters, however, nothing can be seen in a larger area.
The pictures are kind of cool, but clusters was an addiction. It told me how many times i had ridden a trail system. I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt and wait to see how you have improved. Just know we are a small sample of people upset that you took away the clusters.
Hey everyone. Thanks for the additional context and feedback. Really appreciate it! We'll look into it!
Please do look into and re-instate this as the Heatmaps with clusters is the only reason (and i suspect many others) subscribe. Without this i will not renew.
No good if you don’t take photos and i find they obscure other parts of the Heatmap. Can they be turned off when required? In any case, the clusters were far more useful so lets have them back.
Hi Nicky. The orange dots were way better, this was one of the great features of Strava premium and I'm really disappointed that it's gone. I loved seeing the areas I've covered - that's all it needs to show. While I appreciate the effort that goes in to it I think the point of the heat map has been missed - it's not a tool to find activities or view photos, it's a tool to visualise coverage. The orange dots worked brilliantly. The new one has either tiny specs to show the actual routes taken, or massive photos that don't cover an area accurately or adequately - I assume they've been made bigger so you can see the content of the photo (which anyone looking at a heat map is not there to look at). Please re-instate, it wasn't broken!
Late to leave comments, but adding my two cents:
Still missing activity clusters, but have seen the photo clusters as other mentioned. This doesn't have the same effect as I (along with others), don't post photos. People have mentioned this, but adding another comment to reinforce that we miss the clusters allowing easy view of all the areas I've run and how frequently...
Personally, I also miss the easy date changer (i.e. 2021, 2022, 2023). The slider is a nice addition, but if I had to choose between the slider and just a flat out year time frame, I would opt for the year. I find it interesting to see what areas were popular in a given year and on my personal map as I move around.
Nick: The new photos feature is OK but we still want the clusters back! Thank you!
Agreed.
Agreed. Yes, there are far more people who are upset that the clusters are gone.
Exactly! Same here!
the circles of aggregates were great - hope to see them back asap!

Strava developers: when will the activity clusters be re-implemented??? How hard can it be? It was a feature which was there already and then who decided it to let go of the clusters and why? Bring the clusters back!
