[KNOWN ISSUE] Activity Grouping sometimes doesn't work
Since a couple weeks/ months the feedback doesn't show I rode together with other strava users. I haven't changed any settings. It worked woth those users in the past. Any idea what I can do? Adding/ inviting to the ride doesn't be the answer. That will add up the km's to my totale which is not gooed.
Our team is actively investigating an issue with grouping. Unfortunately, until the issue is resolved you may not see consistent group matching. If you have any activities you would like corrected, you can submit a support ticketand our someone from our Support Team may be able to manually group the activities.
If you submit a ticket, please include the link to both your activity as well as an activity you're expecting it to be grouped to. The links should look like this: http://www.strava.com/activities/186108431 For help finding the correct link, please review the information in this help article: How to Link to an Activity, Segment, Profile, or Club We appreciate your patience while we work on resolving this issue.
Me and my friend rode together for 85kms of a 160km tour.
I thought, as soon as more than 50% of the route match in time and location, the activities of two or more persons are shown as group activity.
I've set all activities to 'all'. So has my friend.
The only thing I am doing is, let activityFix mute the activity after upload. Then, after adding some details, I'll unmute the activity.
However, I never found a hint that muting interferes with the group activity feature.
Is it working at all in the first place?
I can't comment on whether the activityfix interferes with the grouping but in general, the feature does work - after every race, I see multiple participants tagged as those I ran with.
I never heard about a 50 % rule but you and your friend could check your privacy settings if group activities are enabled:

Thank you, that’s exactly what we both have set Group activities set to.

OK, thank you. So, it doesn’t work for us at least.
I really can’t see how and why muting an acitvity should interfere with it, though.
What I had tried today was to record my ride with two devices at the same time.
Garmin watch and Strava Android App - had worked, group activity had been created.
So, next test will be: recording with my Garmin 540 and App.
@chrisle
Hi - just want to let you know that recording an activity with multiple recording devices may cause only one of the recordings to upload to your Strava account. The second upload may be blocked as a duplicate, depending on how close the start times in the upload files are.
@Jane OK, good to know. Today were a couple of seconds between starting the two devices. I'll keep that on mind.
@chrisle Another possibility would be that the timestamps of your activities don’t match. That can happen if one device has the wrong clock set. In case one of you two uses a Garmin and switched that to standby during the activity there is the known bug to consider that Garmin forgets to add the standby time to the timestamps.
@Jan_Mantau This! Today I recorded using my Garmin 540 and my phone simultaniously. I stopped at a café for a morning coffee. In such cases I usually set my 540 in standby, when entering the shop. Result - no group activity.
I've had the same issue with group activities for 5 months, I regularly do group rides and have always been grouped with the rest of the group until July and I changed nothing my end with settings, or hardware.
Strava support, when they eventually replied to my ticket after 4 weeks, confirmed that there is a known issue they are working on and suggested I contact them every time I log an activity so they can group me manually.
So I'm basically paying for an social exercise platform that is no longer social, as all my activities are solo, and of course I've not been offered credit, or a partial refund.
I've cancelled my subscription after 6 years.
@mel_s while I don’t know about the situation on Strava’s side, it turned out it is/was an issue with my Garmin device on my side.
I tested it with different Garmin firmware at from that time on it did work again. In my case it definitely was caused by my Garmin540 which did not add timestamps to the GPS track when I paused and activity AND set the device to Standby mode to save battery.
Due to missing/flawed timestamps, Strava was not able to link the different people’s rides, as, technically, they did not take at the same time. ….while my friend was still sitting in the Cafe, I was already shown 20 kms ahead of her on the Strava flyby map
Actually, checking the flyby map should be a good way to confirm whether this is the cause or not.
@chrisle interesting - thanks for the feedback. I have an Edge 1040, I will check the firmware and try not pausing / standby when at the cafe stop, I will also try recording on my fenix 7 simultaneously.
It could certainly be hardware, but most people I ride with use Garmin head units and strange that I’m the only one out of the group that isn’t grouped in Strava.
@mel_s IIRC, I think somewhere in a Garmin forum I had read, that this issue affects all x40/x50 devices. With the latest beta firmware, this issue is already fixed and the devices will record with correct timestamps. I had tried this yesterday, set it in standby during shopping and it did work correctly.
It took me a while to figure all that out, as when I had recorded the activity with my Garmin Instinct 2 watch, the activities had been recorded correctly always and were grouped correctly too.
The issue relates to the cycle computer being set to standby mode. The Strava algorithm calculates the time based on "Elapsed Time," but it does not account for Garmin's pauses during stops. I noticed this by analyzing the flyby from our last group activity. The attached image shows that my break is not recorded (indicated by the black line), giving the impression that I didn't stop. As a result, my lap timing appears out of sync; I left before the others (represented by the red and blue lines), even though we departed together. It would be more accurate if the algorithm included stoppage time in its calculations.
