Up until recently, when I shared a run, the image with stats would retain its aspect ratio. This seems to be no longer the case (in the last week).

For example, here is my latest run, ready to share;

However, when I post or even save the image, it is cropped to the portrait aspect ratio.

This has only happened recently, as I have been sharing in the same way every time. Can anyone shed any light on this?

Actually, looking at everyone elses pics, i’m the only one who seems to also have the ugly new stats text and layout and the Strava logo bottom right and in orange. How can it just be me?

It's not just you, though this specific change only happened 4 days ago - so most of the comments reflect the previous state. But it is as you described… (and I must say I don't like it one bit either 😕)

Ah I see. Rubbish :(

I appreciate the continuous efforts to enhance the app. However, the recent changes to the post-sharing layout, particularly the oversized fonts and stat overlays, tend to overshadow the photos shared, which diminishes the visual appeal of the post. It looks crowded and stuffy and I'll be honest. it's not visually appealing. It would be beneficial to have options to adjust or minimize these overlays, allowing the shared photos to stand out more prominently.

I kind of regret downloading the latest update, I've been taking screenshots instead of using the share option.

Hello all!

With the latest Strava app update, we made improvements to fix the 9:16 image cropping issue. Images should now display correctly without being cut off.

Your input about the size of the stats is really valuable, and we’ve passed it along to the team in charge for consideration in future improvements.

We appreciate you taking the time to share your experience — it helps us continue to improve Strava for everyone.

Please just revert it back (add the square option as another one in the sharing menu carousel) and don't try to improve something that's been working just fine just for the sake of improving it.

Also a question: do you even use your own product? How wasn't any of this caught in an internal release? Or you don't have ring based or feature flag based deployment of new features?

If the answer to the last question is no I'm happy to offer a consulting service how to implement it.

Hey Lola.

I see that again we haven’t gotten any answers on the continued ask from this entire discussion to please allow us some way to export a 1:1 image that’s suitable to share on a social media platform. 9:16 only works for stories. It doesn’t work for feed/grid posts which is the only way I share something like a race PR. Can you please provide an update on this since that’s one of the big things being asked for repeatedly without a response.

Additionally I see you’ve marked this as solved without solving the issues we are mentioning.

Thanks for the update Lola! I guess it kinda works now, but half the map is now darkened by that GIGANTIC vignette und huge text elements. I don’t really think you are improving this feature, but rather degrading it. Also, the 4:3 sharepic format was much more usable to add as an additionl info into a instagram story imho.

Hi Lola,

I’m running v412.0.0 on IOS which was updated 23hrs ago and shared images are still being cropped to 9:16.

Agreed. The original export was much more suitable to add into a story as an additional info, combined with a custom picture. Now i kinda have to fill one story with it but can’t use it differently. Also, half of the map is now darkened by the HUGE vignette, caused by the increased text size.

Hi Lola

the issue is not fixed, at all - we need the option of the very clear(ie not half darkened) map - many people are more interested in the map and where we have been than the actual stats of the activity - I now have to link my garmin to another fitness app, as well as Strava, to get a clear map.

I just realized about this… the new sharing is really bad. At least allow the user to choose between the old and the new one... Or better revert. :D

People here might find this interesting too:

I too have a massive dislike to the new font size and layout. I loved the old layout. Nice and subtle, let the image be the focus. I hope they can fix that.

No, this isn’t fixed at all - there isn’t a usable way to share to an Instagram post (story only) as the long format of image doesn’t work (the devs actually use the app?!). We need the old “square” image share option back as a matter of urgency.

Having to share from Garmin until this is fixed which is a major inconvenience for an app I’m paying for!

What's the point of messing up with something that was working perfectly fine? The new share activity result looks hideous. The font is too big, and in overall it looks ugly. Dear Strava team, why did you do it? 🙄

So I’m one of the users that is really annoyed about the new layout and font size. What I have learned through this thread is that using Garmin Connect you can do the same thing and it gives you a range layout options. Garmin though doesn’t show elevation gain, which I consider very important.

Hi @Lola, I’m afraid that the information that you were provided by the product team is not correct.

I’m attaching a sample activity, clearly showing that the photo *is* cut off.

Original:

Strava (I can’t even attach the export as it's 6MB - so just a screenshot):

Also landscape oriented photos are cropped.

Strava (also the blurred edges are seriously bad, not mentioning the quality degradation):

Would you please pass this back to the engineering team, thank you.

Nothing has changed at all on the iPhone app updated and this is the useless image

It’s not fixed

I've created a small website to do what Strava no longer wants to do. There's still a lot to improve, but it already allows me to recreate a landscape image with my stats. What do you think?

I just dont understand why things keep changing and usually end up being worse. The map worked perfectly. Why screw it up? When I want a map, I just want a map, I dont want a gradient over the top of it, text all over the top of it..

The log in one time code is another example of screwing up something that had been working for ever. Why?

Guys look how “fixed” it is! Issue totally solved. Nothing to see here. Immaculate presentation to share my run in any form other than a story. /sarcasm
