"View segments map" is missing

Forum|alt.badge.img+1

Hello everyone. I can see that Strava is pushing out some decent new features lately, but a recent one has given me a negative opinion. While it's really cool to see PRs and trophies on the activity map, a feature I really used a lot was the classic segments map.

I and surely others enjoy seeing all segments on an activity, with PRs or not, in the context of the route. I use it to compare times from previous activities, discover new segments when I review, and find local athletes. Consider this missing use case: if you are or follow a user who does a lot of the same roads or new roads, you might have nothing show up on the current map for a given activity. Yes the list view still exists, but it would be a less enjoyable experience to go to a new location, ride or run, and need to dig around to learn about each segment you passed rather than the map+list. This change slows me down. The classic map+list also allows you to see where and how an athlete traveled, in case of an obstruction or updated routing, but the segment view screen shows how it was created which could be 2, 3, 5 years or more!

In short, the full segments list with map is a powerful feature that I used all the time when reviewing my and others' activities. Perhaps not everyone uses Strava this way, but it's important to power users like me. Please reinstate this feature.

I am in definite agreement with you arc88!

I'd really like to see this feature reinstated.

Absolutely agree. I used to use the segment map all the time for context of where it was in the ride. Hope they will bring it back.

I also agree, that was a often used an liked feature.

I fully agree. This is a feature I heavily, heavily miss.

I would also love to see the View Segments Map reinstated please. I found it really useful and am missing it now it’s not available.

Does seem odd - they remove things for the sake of it.

It was a good feature,

  - always brings to mind ''if ain't broke, don't fix it''.

+1 to this as I use this feature all the time. Why on earth would it be removed?!

To be clear, this is the feature I am talking about. I didn't have any of my own screenshots but this is from one of Strava's own guides, albeit a much older version of the app. Still, it's been around since the app looked like this, it's clearly an established, core feature!

i used the ‘view segments on map’ feature [often] to explore new areas, typically on other users recent rides to determine what segments are clear and actively being ridden in remote areas. it being removed is a huge loss for route planning. cancelled my strava subscription over this and do not intend on renewing if this feature isn’t brought back. have no use for multiple map types, whatever the new buggy gradient and avalanche layers are, 3D maps, playback, achievement maps, the entire progress tab… BRING BACK THE VIEW SEGMENTS ON ACTIVITY MAP!

Totally agree. It's the only feature that made it stand out from the rest. I took will be exercising my right to be forgotten by Strava if this feature doesn't come back soon.

Totalmente de acuerdo, está muy bien el nuevo mapa, pero debería incluir la posibilidad de ver sobre el mapa todos y cada uno de los segmentos por los que se ha pasado!

That feature was the primary reason I used Strava for mountain biking.

Now, when I look at a segment, it exits in isolation, without the visual context of ride…. it’s extremely difficult to tell WHERE in my route it took place.

Strava, put it back!!!

has anyone in this thread done anything to reach out to strava about this? does anyone from strava actually look at this board? is there an official channel to request the show segment on map feature gets reinstated? i’d like to file a complaint, just can’t seem to figure out where to complain on the app or in a browser on a phone.

Hi admins, is it possible to escalate this thread to the product team? There have been quite a few voices and eyes on this thread but it’s a feature we users cannot do anything about ourselves. It’s more like a petition to restore a very useful tool! I would also like to add the tag “feedback” since I cannot edit my OP. Thanks.

Please bring back segment list view for the map… This was one of the most boneheaded things you guys have done to remove this.

I am a longtime Strava subscriber and I completely agree that the segment viewer needs to come back. This is one feature I used ALL the time to compare segment efforts, find segments, find new trails, see what trails got more/less traffic, etc. It was excellent and the `present version of it is horrible. Just having a few segments appear on the map is not helpful. The old list method that you could click to show the segment as it appeared in the context of the ride was the number one feature I used. I’m not sure if this was a feature for premium members or not, but either way, I am running out of reasons to continue as a paying subscriber. We need some feedback here from Strava staff as to why this change was made. I should add that I am an android user.

I submitted a case on the desktop web version of the app. Scroll down to the bottom to find the help section, follow that, and submit a ticket. It is likely the only way to snag some eyes of the devs and make something happen. So dumb to remove such a useful tool. This pursuit of the the social aspect of Strava falls flat for everyone I know. The constant drivel of social media is what keeps me using Strava and not other social media. Strava is a tool, I never sit and count my kudos nor do they make me feel better/worse. But figuring out new trails or ways to link together trails does make me feel better.
