Not recording completely

Sam3
Mt. Kenya

After years of behaving correctly and without changing any device, Strava now seems to give up recording after, say, 60/90 minutes. At the end of the activity, it leaves a message: "Strava has recovered from a problem and has resumed recording".

A straight-line is drawn on the map between where the problem presumably started and when the activity ended. Plenty of GPS satellites in view.

Cycling, walking and hiking. No significant periods of me being stationary. Auto-pause disabled.

Anyone else suffer from this?

Hi @Sam3

Thanks for getting back in touch. Below are the steps we recommend you work through to resolve this scenario. Apologies if you have already tried some of them. Please note that battery/power management settings may interfere with long recordings and I strongly recommend you check and adjust those as described below:

Can you first try turning your phone completely off/on and then flipping location services off/on? Before your next activity, wait several minutes with a clear view of the sky so your phone can get a strong connection.

If that doesn't help improve your recordings, this may be caused by certain Android settings. There are a few possible culprits and some of them are unique to the make/model of Android, so please check the following:

  • Find your phone's location settings and make sure that you are using the option that allows for the best GPS performance/accuracy.

  • Find and disable your phone's battery saver settings. These are typically located in Settings > Battery > Battery Saver.

  • If your phone has a battery management mode, please turn it to "off" instead of "medium" or "high".

Please give those and try and let me know if that improves things.

Hi Jane

I have tried your suggestions but continue to have problems with getting a complete recording. Strava stops recording during motion and on finishing: 'Strava has recovered from a problem and has resumed your recording'. No indication of what the problem might actually be.

I tried running a different app today (Komoot) at the same time as Strava. Komoot has recorded the route correctly, Strava has a problem.

What do you suggest?

Regards

Sam

Hi Jane

I've tried the suggestions you kindly supplied but I regret to advise that again, I have lost the tracking after (almost exactly) 90 minutes.

Phone restart.

Wide, open skies. Plenty of satellites.

Location off then on, Actual location correct before start.

Permissions OK.

Battery saver 'off' (has never been 'on').

Auto-pause 'Off'.

Recording seems fine at first but then stops after a period (I could investigate the exact elapsed time?).

I'm at a loss to understand this. Phone hasn't changed for a long time but this issue is recent.

Any help appreciated.

Regards

Sam

One more thing to check is that Strava is allowed to run in the background. Settings > Apps > Strava > App Battery Usage > Allow background usage

One test you can do which will use up a lot of battery but can help figure things out is to disable your screen timeout and leave Strava open while you record your activity. If everything works then it's somehow related to a power saving feature which at least can point you towards the right settings to be messing with.

Hi Jane

Thanks again for your message.

I note your suggestions; The phone is turned off every day and restarted in the morning. I can confirm the settings are correct with respect to the battery saver and location detail. I'll try stopping and restarting location as you say, but the problem is not at start, it's after a period of time, seemingly near-multiples of 30 minutes.

At the moment, my phone has a signal from 14 satellites....

I'll have another go tomorrow.

Regards

Sam

Hello @Sam3

Thanks for post and sorry to hear of the issue!

That straight line you're seeing on the map means that something prevented the GPS data from being recorded to the App.  If you can let me know what device you're using to record (for example the IOS or Android Mobile phone App, an Apple watch, or something else) I'll be happy to provide more detailed troubleshooting steps on how to correct this.

Hi Jane

Thanks for your message.

I'm using the Android mobile app to record my (modest) activities. (Pixel 3, Android 12). I have checked the usual: GPS satellites, auto-pause, permissions etc. All seems fine. The most recent issue just stopped recording after almost exactly 3 hours whilst I was moving. Wide open country.

Each time there is an issue, I get the report: 'Strava has recovered from a problem and has resumed your recording'. This is as I try to save the activity.

Having used the app for some years, this issue is most irritating. Any help would be appreciated.

Regards

Sam
