I have an Apple Watch Ultra 2 and typically use it to record all of my activity. I use the Apple workout to select the activity (outdoor ride, outdoor run or outdoor swim). Usually the activity will automatically upload to Strava once I complete it, but periodically I have to import it manually, through the Strava app.

A couple of days ago, without having changed any settings or anything, the map data from the workouts stopped being uploaded to Strava, even though the rest of the data was there (HR, pace, calories, etc.). I tried deleting the workout from Strava and importing it again, but I get a message in Strava saying “there is no map data but would I like to import it anyway?”. When I check the data in the Apple workout app, the map data is there and when I check the uploaded data to another third party app, like training peaks, the map data is there. It’s evident that the issue is somewhere in the conversation between Strava and Apple, but I have zero restrictions on location permissions, nor have I changed any settings recently.

Any ideas?

Hi @nz74y5vsgi,

if you export the run (e.g. from training peaks) as a .fit file and upload to Strava via https://www.strava.com/upload/select, does it show the map as expected? (obviously it's not a proper solution but it could help in finding the root cause...)

I’m using AW too (non-ultra version), the syncing works as usually, so it may be something specific… (Strava has been having problems with some very long activities imports from AW, people have been mentioning e.g. marathons not syncing - could your issue be related?)

Ok, so I did do that and the map data showed up. The funny thing is that while uploading the file, it told me there was already a duplicate file like that in my activity list, so clearly the data is there, but strava is choosing not to show it in the activity. Anyway, the activity and map is up there now.

Not sure what it all means, but I would love to have a fix and not have to go through that circuitous route moving forward.

Great - so at least we know that the workaround was successful.

Now for an actual solution… is there anything specific about the problematic activities? Sports type, route length, duration, … what do they have in common? If you record e.g. a short walk with gps now - shall it sync correctly with the map or would it glitch again?
