Walks have been added to running challenges as of January 2024 and as a person who does both run and walk acitvities as separate sports, this has ruined the experience of challenges in the app for me, and in general.

My walks are no counting towards running challenges which rightly used to be separate. They are separate sports.

I found an idea here from last year where somebody requested the opposite and now it has been implemented. From their point of view, they were lesser abled and some walks "felt" like runs to them, which i acknowledge - however, the solution there is ti simply record a running workout on your device, not a walk.

To improve the experience for walkers then more 5k, 10k and monthly mileage challenges can be set up to keep it interesting.

Last year I really enjoyed tracking my walking challenge and sepaately doing the running challenges.

Now there are fewer challenges in total which seems like the app is getting worse, not better.

Also importantly need to point out that runs are not included in the walking challenges.... I guess that's the real punchline to this joke.

I agree that Garmin Connect is a good alternative to Strava. Strava haven't listened - walking is apparently still running as far as they're concerned. There's no way I'm renewing my subscription now.

Hey look at me, I’m swimming on asphalt.

Agree, I get the same data from my tracker.

I WOULD LIKE TO STICK WITH STRAVA FOR THE COMMUNITY AND WHAT ONCE WERE GREAT CHALLENGES.

But it doesn’t seem they want us in their community…

I remember when I first saw someone complete the 300km run challenge… it was inspiring.

STRAVA DOESNT WANT TO INSPIRE US ANYMORE.

Completely agree. If this is not rectified I will not renew with Strava. It is frustrating as I like to track my monthly KM as I'm aiming for 100km running per month. But having walks included in the running figures means I have to manually calculate which ultimately means Strava has become less useful. Please fix this quick Strava.

100% agree. If this is not rectified I will not renew Strava.

Cancelled my renewal, vote with my feet

I can’t wait to start canoeing my walks to keep them separate from my runs.

I have just had to change all my walks to ‘hike’ this has now removed all walking from my monthly run totals in challenges and this has also kept in the footwear I was using.

I tried to change walks to ice skating as a protest but ‘gear’ footwear used got removed.

I like to keep track on distances of footwear so from now on all ‘walks’ will be logged as a ‘hike’ as Strava simply do not care about this very random thinking on their behalf.

This is brilliant! I think I’ll be using this.

but strava, don’t your think that a hike is kind of a walk, maybe that too should be added to the running challenge… and since we are on the subject snorkelling should feature too!

I figured out now, that subscription is useless now, why?
For me I use it only for trophy case (just to preserve statistics), now
a) 200k, 300k were removed.
b) 100k it's combined with walk.
So, run challenges at all are now completely broken and useless, therefore there is no profit to updatehave a subscription! Because except trophy case where is an advantage to have it?
Great move Strava and awesome product decision!!!
My applause to product managers!

I totally agree that these activities use to be seperated, and it also ruines the challenge for me.

I think maybe it's done by Strava, because there is a premium option, in the paid version, for controlling your monthly goals, and the run challenge (for example 100k/month) could be an option to sail around opting in for the paid version.....

The challenges have been made much easier - perhaps this idea could help Strava and us meet in the middle?

if that's the reason, then it has backfired, because it has lead me to cancel, and I stated in my cancellation that it was because of this and the dumbing down of 'challenges' in general.

I don't really use all the extra features of the subscription, I did it to support the platform, but support works both ways.

That's it I just cancelled my subscription because of this stupid rule, and because the mods don't have the courtesy to respond to us here. I'll just switch to Garmin Connect full time.

Strava why are you ignoring all of us who have told you that we’re canceling our subscriptions because of the changes to the running challenges? What else can we do to make you listen to us? You’re actively losing subscribers!

Lol’ing at the phrase “ran with it.” Doubt anyone working for Strava actually runs based on their recent decisions…

Hey Strava!  Does running count for the walking challenge??  Seems about right.  If walking counts as running in the running challenge, why does running not count as walking in the walking challenge?

Let's try to flood them directly: support @ strava . zendesk . com
(remove spaces, Strava do not allow to use this email :D)

Great idea PauliusG! Here's what I emailed:

Hi Strava Team

The Community Hub has been continuously voicing their discontent (including myself) at the inclusion of walking activities towards running challenges, yet you don’t seem to be listening.

It mightn’t seem like such a big deal to the powers that be at Strava, but it has bothered me so much that I have cancelled my premium membership and so have many other people.

Why would anyone think that walking should count towards running?? Yet strangely you don't count running activities towards the walking badges!!

The whole thing is so ridiculous I’ve been changing my ‘walking’ activities to ‘golf’ so they don’t count towards the running challenges (I don’t even play golf!)

Please take a look at the Community Hub and see the hundreds of comments and kudos and membership cancellations because of this.

Kindly listen to what is being said in the Community Hub and  reconsider what you have done with these challenges.

This is a really good point, and another oversight.

I have just emailed them too.

The lack of a response is uuuuuuuuuunreal.  I have worked for some pretty rubbish companies in my time, places that treat customers like this just don't give a.....

As time has passed, It is less about the badges for me.  The really annoying thing is the walking distance being merged with the running distance.  Such a silly idea.

There is nowhere to view calendar month running totals on the world's most popular running app 🙂

Hey Dan - completely agree with all this. Really fed-up about it… but you know you can still see your monthly running miles, right? On the iOS app, go to ‘you’, ‘monthly activities’, ‘see more of your March stats’, and there it is broken down into running and walking and compared to last month. Screenshot below…

Thanks for this

i can see it for Feb and current month now!  Would be great to see previous data   Just need 6 people to vote on it and I’m sure it will happen 🙂

Garmin Connect has some good features AND they don't require a subscription fee. I've found their route making features to be more useful than Strava's were.
