All my previous entries and friends are gone after the update. I am continually promoted to start a payed subscription. Is this a pay app now?

As @Jan_Mantau mentioned, this can happen if you accidentally create an empty/duplicate Strava account. I recommend signing out of Strava, and then signing back in, being sure to sign in with the email address you used to create your Strava account. If you're not sure of the password you can reset it. Password reset instructions
