Non-club activity settings for club members

Una_D
Mt. Kenya

I am setting up a club that will serve as a trail maintenance hub for our local trail stewards.   Users will share their trail work activities as "hikes".

How do I set up the club such that members who use Strava for other activities don't find those activities sharing to the group?

Also is there a way to set up group settings such that individuals can follow and contribute to the group, without other members seeing all of thier Strava activities?

Thanks!

Hi @Una_D

Thanks for reaching out. Here are some options for you to consider to get as close to your intended experience as possible:

  • Make your club invite-only. This can be found on the edit page for the club on Strava.com, or through the mobile app by going to the club's details page and pressing the gear icon on the top right corner.
    • Invite-only clubs only show the club's recent activity to members, limiting non-members from seeing that feed
  • Hide the leaderboard and stats, also through the same gear icon on the club details screen on the mobile app. That removes the competitive component of the club.
  • Set your club's sport type to 'Hiking' so that only those activity types are included
    • Clubs will include activities visible to everyone and only followers of the owning athlete; only club members that follow an athlete with activities visible to their followers will see their activities in the club activity feed. Their other followers will still see those activities in other spaces, like their home feeds or other joined clubs where those activities are eligible.
    • Currently, there isn't a way to show an activity in only one club while excluding it from other clubs or other surfaces. Activity privacy controls allow athletes to determine whether their activities are visible to everyone, their followers only, or themselves only.

I hope this helps you create the club experience you are looking for!

Hi @msruns, I assume you're looking for confirmation here. I'll also add to your example that Susan, Jim, and Bob are all in the same club. Susan follows Jim, so she can see Jim's activities (visible to followers only) in her home feed as well as in the club's activity feed. Bob will not see Jim's activities in either feed since he does not follow Jim. Throwing myself into this, and having not joined the club, I will not see Jim's activities anywhere, and cannot see the club's activity feed at all.

And in no circumstance will anyone but Jim see his activities set to the visibility setting "Only You," in or out of the club.

I hope this helps!

Hi Sunny415, focusing on the sub bullet in this response: clubs will include activities visible to everyone and only followers of the owning athlete; only club members that follow an athlete with activities visible to their followers will see their activities in the club activity feed. Their other followers will still see those activities in other spaces, like their home feeds or other joined clubs where those activities are eligible.

To illustrate an example of this... Jim has a follower, Susan. Jim is also a member of an invite-only club. Both Bob and Jim are members of the club, but Bob is not one of Jim's followers. When Jim completes activities and makes them available to followers, just confirming that Susan can see Jim's activities, while Bob cannot. And under no circumstance if an activity's visibility is set to "Only You" would Susan or Bob see Jim's activity. Thanks for your help!
