Hello Community Members,

We are here to let you know what to expect as FATMAP transitions to Strava.

FATMAP and Strava joined forces in January 2023 to make outdoor experiences more accessible. Over the next several months, FATMAP's 3D maps and other features will be built into Strava to create the world’s best platform for planning, navigating, and sharing outdoor adventures with the largest global community of active people.

As we move towards this joint mission, we will retire the FATMAP app and website on October 1, 2024. Until then, you’ll be able to use all the FATMAP features you currently enjoy. After October 1, several FATMAP features will be available in Strava, and the FATMAP app and website will no longer be available.

FATMAP users who wish to transfer their routes or receive copies of their adventures, routes, waypoints, photos, and guidebooks should follow the steps outlined here by October 1st.

We know you may have questions about this, please read below and let us know if there is anything else we can help you with.....

When will this happen?
FATMAP will be discontinued on October 1st, and you will no longer be able to use the FATMAP app and website. Please make sure that you have downloaded your account data by this date if you wish to keep a copy.

Are you going to maintain the current app until October 1st?
Yes, the current FATMAP app will remain available until
October 1st

Will the FATMAP app remain on my device after October 1st?
The app will remain on your device until you delete it, but it will no longer be usable after October 1st.

Which FATMAP features will be built into Strava?
Bringing mapping technology from FATMAP to Strava continues to be a key priority for us. FATMAP's 3D map is already visible in Strava's Flyover feature, and now includes the ability to pause and modify flight speed. You can also see FATMAP's 3D map images in the Strava feed.

As we look ahead, we are in the process of integrating FATMAPs 3D map, including winter satellite maps and terrain tools, into other map screens within the Strava app and website.

In addition, FATMAP route content, excluding user generated content, will be moved to Strava. We are currently working on the new home for these routes so they can be used seamlessly within the Strava app. Please note that you can also proactively transfer your routes on FATMAP to Strava before October 1st using our data tool here, which we encourage you to do.

We appreciate that many of you use certain FATMAP features that will not be available in Strava in time for the coming northern hemisphere winter. This includes waypoints, personal guidebooks, national topo maps (including IGN and OS maps), offline map downloads of the FATMAP map and live snow and piste information. We are exploring adding these and similar features to Strava in the future.

Will I be able to transfer my Routes to Strava?
You can transfer your Routes to Strava using the data tool
here. You can find information on how to access your Routes on the Strava website here and in the app here. Please note that only the route title, description, and route line can be transferred to Strava. If you wish to keep other information about the route, such as assigned grades and photos, please export it as well.

Your Adventures, Guidebooks, and Waypoints can not be transferred to Strava; please use the tool here to download them.

Strava is headquartered in San Francisco, California, and our services are provided to you by Strava Inc. By using Strava Services, you consent to your data being processed in the U.S.

Do I need to transfer my Routes to Strava to use the Strava subscription voucher?
You can use the Strava subscription voucher without transferring your Routes to Strava. If you choose to transfer your data to Strava, you consent to your data being transferred from FATMAP to Strava Inc. For more information regarding Strava's data processing practices and your rights, please see our
Privacy Policy

Whether you transfer your routes to Strava or not, we recommend you export all your account data before the October 1st deadline. After October 1st, this data will be permanently deleted.

Can I download a map to use offline in the Strava app?
Yes, you can download and follow a route offline on Strava. Instructions for making a route available offline here and for following it in the app
here. You can also export a route to your GPS device or export the GPX file.

How do I export my account data?
You can export your account data here
We recommend you export all your account data before the October 1st deadline. After October 1st, this data will be permanently deleted. Please note that only Routes you created yourself are exported. Routes created by other people and saved in your guidebooks will NOT be in your data export. If you wish to save these routes and you have an Explore subscription, you can export the gpx file from FATMAP as described here.

I have already exported my account data, but I want to continue using the FATMAP app. How can I make sure I do not lose any data?
You can export your account data multiple times, though no more than once per day. We recommend keeping the downloaded data you already have as a backup and then repeating the export process once you have finished adding any new routes, adventures, waypoints, and guidebooks to your FATMAP account. Please note that
you will no longer be able to export your data after the October 1st shutdown, so it is important that you make your final export by this deadline.

How do I delete my FATMAP Account?
You can delete your account either via our mobile app or our website. Once you have deleted your account, you cannot retrieve your data. You can export your account data and delete your account here. If you wish to delete your account without exporting your data, you can also do that via the Settings menu in the mobile app, following these steps: Profile tab > three lines top right > Settings > My Account > Delete account.

Please note that after October 1st, all user account data will be permanently deleted; please make sure you export your data before then.

I have migrated my Routes to Strava but want to continue using the FATMAP app. How do I proceed?
You can migrate your Routes to Strava multiple times, but not more than once per day. Routes that have already been migrated will not be duplicated. After October 1st, you can no longer use the FATMAP app.

I have a FATMAP Explore membership with my Strava subscription; what will happen to my Explore access after October 1st?
You will continue to enjoy certain FATMAP features on Strava. Your access to the FATMAP app and website will end on October 1st.

Will my Explore privileges remain valid after October 1st?
No, please collect your codes here and use them before October 1st. Strava offers some brand discounts via Challenges, and you can find out more about them here.

What will happen to my FATMAP Explore subscription after October 1st?
If your current subscription does not include Strava, we will provide you with a 6-month Strava subscription voucher so you can continue to enjoy certain FATMAP features on Strava. If the subscription period for which you have paid has not yet expired, you are also eligible for a prorated refund. In this case, please send us a message at explore@fatmap.com

How do I get a refund?
If you do not wish to avail of the voucher offering for a Strava subscription and your current subscription period on FATMAP has not yet expired, you are eligible for a prorated refund. Please send your refund request to explore@fatmap.com.

I have a Pro account with FATMAP. Will I get the same access in Strava?
Our Pro Access program will not continue, however you may be eligible for a Strava Pro Badge. You can find out more and apply
here.

Please let us know if you have any additional questions. If there is a feature on FATMAP that you would like to see on Strava, please add that to our Ideas Board here.

We welcome your feedback regarding this update and ask that you keep on topic and abide by our Community Guidelines.

Dear Orphan of FatMap member, I'm sorry but it will never happens.

Just to better understand: when you speak about 3d maps are you referring to the overlays like gradients/avalanche/snow coverage and so on? If not, will they be there in any case? And what about the summer/winter map with the open slopes/lifts?

But I don't want to be an orphan of FATMAP.  I just want my FATMAP back. Why is the world so cruel? 😭

I undertand you, but it's the same destiny of ViewRanger when it was acquired by OutdoorActive.

This is not a Disney cartoon where Snow-white survives the witch.
Here Snow-White have to die, no way to save it.

Hi there, I am also very concerned about whether or not slope, avalanche risk and snow depth will be available to use in Strava.  Without these features the massive community of winter back country users will be less safe as there is no comparable alternative in anything other than Fatmap.

Hi there, myself and the entire back country skiing community is very concerned about this transition.  We are afraid that we will be losing all of the functionality of Fat Map with regards to layers.  Most urgently this includes slope, snow depth and avalanche risk color grading.  Almost the entire winter back country recreation community relies on Fatmap to plan safe navigation in mountainous winter terrain.  The current functionality in Strava isn't even close and the 'stylized' inaccurate exaggeration of prominence also makes determining slope angle much more difficult.  Could you please reply to address these concerns?  I am worried that this winter we will not be able to plan as safely in the backcountry due to the loss of this beloved mapping program.  This could even result in an uptick of avalanche related deaths around the world as it becomes more difficult to plan routes.  I think I speak for the whole back country skiing community when I say - Please please please do not cancel Fatmap and leave us all without our beloved navigational tools!!!!  There is nothing comparable to Fatmap's functionality in other mapping software like Gaia and CalTopo.  Strava would be absolutely shooting themselves in the foot to cancel Fatmap without including the functionality of the layering and terrain ratings and opting for an exaggerated relief.  I have personally LOVED Strava for the past couple of years but this transition has changed my opinion on Strava.  It has not adequately been communicated what will be transferred over and the current state of things is EXTREMELY lacking.  Please address these concerns, I am sure you are aware of the uproar in the winter backcountry community.

Will the libraries of routes that are currently available in fatmap remain available in Strava? Because the database of existing routes is one of the cornerstone of fatmap usability.

Also, you mention a 6 months voucher for current fatmap explore members like myself. When will we receive such voucher?

Do we know when IGN mapping will be available as a layer in Strava as the transition from Fatmaps takes place.  Will all the other base mapping (i.e. Swisstopo) also be available.  I have found that the Strava Enhanced maps extension no longer seems to work; is this just me ?  Thanks.

To be honest I think this is a pretty unacceptable stance, if expecting people to move over ot the "new" mapping app, at least provide a clear roadmap showing how each use case of the old app is covered or at least going to be covered. Losing OS and IGN maps is a massive kick in the teeth and currently I think I'll be taking my subscription elsewhere and know of multiple others planning on doing the same unless we get a clear roadmap that this will be integrated soon

Almost the entire winter backcountry recreation community relies on Fatmat for its visualization, overlay, and route planning/recording capabilities. Why has Strava failed to address the concerns of Fatmap users ahead of its deletion on October 1st? I am worried that myself and others will be exposed to greater risk without access to these backcountry features. Strava will be directly responsible for an increase in backcountry accidents, incidents, and potential fatal accidents due to the disappearance of Fatmaps features and capabilities.

I'm extremely concerned that the loss of fatmap and associated community data will negatively impact the safety of the backcountry and mountaineering community.

There seems to be a lack of engagement or communication from Strava with users to address these concerns, in fact there seems to be an active effort to silence any negative comments.

Although it seems to be useless, I'm asking Strava to please reconsider there decision to remove the fatmap app - surely there's a way to integrate the features you want into strava without deleting such a valuable resource that has undoubtedly improved safety.

Hi, will the Avalanche slope angle layers be integrated into Strava? These are very important for safety while backcountry ski touring and snowshoeing and I'm worried of the impact on the winter sports community if these features are lost.. FatMap was easily the best product on the market for assessing slope angles and winter conditions and I can't justify paying for Strava without these features.

Please keep Fatmap online as long as Strava is not filling the gap.

This features need to be in Strava before killing fatmap :
- working 3D map (sorry but currently it's buggy as **bleep**)
- stop starting the map on SF ! We don't care about your tech valley, we care about our natural alpine valleys
- winter sat imagery
- french topo map (IGN)
- avalanche risk/aspect/elevation/gradient overlays

You are developing a very negative image of Strava among Fatmap users by claiming an end to Fatmap before even starting to begin to implement any of its wonderful features.

The ability to search for back country and freeride ski routes is the best feature about fat map, the way they are graded is excellent and makes skiing in new places possible. It's why people love it , please retain the features!

As of today Strava is not remotely as good as FatMap to prepare a hike and use during one. As mentioned below, we can understand but please don’t make FatMap go offline.
The truely great feature of FatMap is the ability to have topo maps available like the IGN, please keep that feature!!

Hello, i understand, that its really difficult to integrate the Fatmap features into Strava. Because both apps are designed for very different user groups. Thats why I didnt understand the aquisition in the first place. Anyways: I'm sure the Alpinist Community would be able to carry the costs of keeping the fatmap app running. Can you please consider a way to not kill the app and its carefully designed features, that potentially save lives up in the mountains?

Cheers from Germany

Hey Phil,

seems like you enjoy mountain sports. That maybe we have a common interest in keeping the fatmap app running exactly as it is right now and has been for the last years. there is no way all the life-saving features in the fatmap app can be integrated into Strava. Because Strava has a well designed, minimalistic interface that targets runner and biker in urban environments. No need to mix those target groups. We just want fatmap Up-and-running and I believe the alpin community will be very open for investing into this.

i started the evaluation period to understand if for me Strava will worth the payment.

As at the moment there are not the Fatmap 3d maps shown as Fatmap show them , for me there's no value in Strava su support it with a paied plan.

If the maps will be integrated as tey are in Fatmap i'll consider to pay.

I know that 1 user doesn't change anything for you, but for what i've read right now my feeling is that there are many many Fatmap users that have my same ideas... so i guess it could be a big problem.

Honestly, I think this is a pretty disappointing move by Strava. Fatmap is such a great app with a solid UI—sure, it’s got some quirks, but overall, it’s essential for anyone who does alpinism or backcountry activities. Now they’re throwing that away by trying to half-heartedly integrate it into Strava.

The features I rely on in Fatmap just aren’t there in Strava, and the mapping feels more geared toward casual runs or local rides, rather than the serious terrain many of us are interested in. Why force the integration of two apps that function perfectly fine on their own? Strava is, at its core, a social fitness platform, and it works well for that. But it doesn’t—and likely never will—cater to those of us who need more detailed, precise mapping for exploring complex terrain.

It feels like they’re diluting what makes both apps good. Strava is great for tracking workouts and connecting with others, but it’s not going to replace Fatmap’s depth of functionality for those of us heading into the mountains or backcountry. By trying to combine them, they’re not improving either experience—just making it harder for people who depend on Fatmap’s features.

In the end, this feels like more of a business move than something that benefits users. I really hope Strava rethinks this and keeps Fatmap as a standalone app for those of us who need it.

Please can you confirm whether the OS mapping overlay feature in Fatmap will be available in Strava, and if so when?

Good luck getting an answer to that…

Believe me, it is very easy to answer to your question. No need to ask Strava. The answer is ... never.

The email I got said I have till Dec 31st to redeem the code - but here you say oct 1st so which is correct?

Hey, just wanted to say thanks for killing an awesome app. We all know Strava will never implement half of the amazing features Fatmap has. Took you like 4 years to rollout dark mode lmao (your product team is absolutely clueless and devs are probably busy with all the community **bleep** you are doing in SF). I have an upcoming ski&sail trip to Lofoten in spring and now will have to spend a **bleep** ton of time exporting all the community made routes. Thanks a lot! If by the end of the year Strava at least does not display the same community routes as Fatmap for sports like skitouring, climbing, and mountaineering, with at least some map overlaying like flat spots or gradients I am cancelling my subscription.

Fatmap will be killed on oct 1st, and you have until the end of the year to redeem the code and see for yourself that none of Fatmap is in Strava 🤣
