Tuesday Chat with Team Strava: History of Strava - Week 2

Who invented Segments? 🤔 🤔 Long before Strava existed, cyclists were talking about their fastest times up iconic climbs. We all know “if it’s not on Strava, it didn’t happen”, so how did segments originate? They were invented by one of Strava’s co-founders, Davis Kitchel, inspired by a Wednesday night group ride in the late 90s. “There were notable, locally named climbs with well understood start and finish lines during which the ride turned into a race to the top with the prize being stature and bragging rights. Not everybody could make it to each Wednesday ride, which often led to comments with no proof like ‘Oh, I rode that climb last week and was at least 30 seconds faster than we rode today.’” With nothing to back these claims and verify them, Davis, a software engineer, set out to obtain better data and keep track of efforts. The idea of Strava was first conceived of in the mid 1990s, by our co-founders Michael Horvath and Mark Gainey, but it wasn’t until 2009 that they officially founded Strava as a website for cyclists to map their rides. We’ve come a long way since then, and now support many activity types including running, walking, team sports and indoor workouts. It’s always fun to look back on our roots and reminisce about “way back when”. Hey Strava Family, Welcome Home! (October)

Hey! First, I want to thank you for visiting our Strava Community Hub. This is a space where athletes are able to meet and treat each other like Family. As your Family Member, I would like to say Welcome Home! My name is Bryant and here are a few things about myself. I'm originally from Memphis, Tennessee but coming up on my fourth year living in California. I'm approaching my 2 Year Anniversary working for Strava. My favorite sport is Basketball but I use Running on Strava to track my conditioning and stay in shape. My goal for this month is to run a total of 60 miles. At 2 miles per day, I believe this is very possible and would be a huge accomplishment! It would be great to get to know you! HOT or COLD?

Do you prefer exercising in the heat or cold? I'd pick the heat any day. I'm simply not a fan of freezing my fingers, toes, nose and eyeballs off. How about you? Comment below if you prefer being 🌞 = hot or ❄️ = cold.

How do you beat the heat?

So, my wife and I like to get out and run, but with the summer sun and humidity, it can be hard to get outside and not just feel like we are melting.  We try to run first thing in the am (before it gets too hot), but that is when the humidity here is the highest... later in the day, we have lower humidity, but a scorching hot sun.What do you do to 'beat the heat'?  Has anybody tried those "Arctic Cool" shirts?  Run at night?  Run indoors on a treadmill? (I don't like to do this, since we spend so much time indoors in the winter).  Cycling isn't as bad, since you at least generate more wind with the movement - any other activities you migrate to when it is hot outside?Who actually likes running in the heat (and why)?  We see a lot of people out in the peak heat of day - wondering how??

Hello! Thanks for visiting the Strava Community Hub.  I'm Jane and here's a few things about me: I'm originally from Canada (Alberta) but I've been a  U.S. resident for a while and have lived in California, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York. I've worked for Strava for nine years. My favorite activities tend to change throughout the seasons; right now I'm enjoying walking and strength training the most. I'm not currently training for any races or events, but I am looking forward to cheering on the runners in the NYC Marathon in November. Park rangers tracking Strava?

A friend of mine received a ticket from the town for riding a small section of trail that is apparently off limits to bikes. He rode very early in the morning and encountered no one. When he called the town to ask why he was ticketed they told him that they found his ride on social media. He does not use any social media and does not post his rides anywhere except Strava.  Has anyone else experienced this?  How does one easily even find segment activity of other riders without actually riding the segment?

Never have I ever...

Tried (fill in the blank) sport! What's a sport you've always wanted to try? 🤔 🤔 Risk is my middle name, I'm a big adrenaline junkie and am constantly on the lookout for a greater challenge. Most people don't like trying new things because they hate being bad at something. I find it humbling and motivating when I'm a beginner. When someone tells me "that's crazy, that's not possible" I transmute that into fuel for motivation 💪 I watched a documentary on Netflix called The Alpinist a few months ago and was really intrigued by Marc-André Leclerc, who was a remarkable solo free climber. I've tried climbing previously, and my spaghetti cyclist arms struggle quite a bit with the challenges the sport presents. However, ice climbing ⛏️ seems a lot more appealing to me and I'd love to try that someday, barring I gain enough upper body strength. Something about the danger, mental challenges and the constantly changing variables seems very enticing

Are there boards on Strava to post if anyone is interested in renting out an enduro e-bike? I have 2, (medium frames) YTs available. Perhaps you've wanted to try one out before purchase of are traveling and want to get a ride in.

Women's Euro 2022 - wow!

That was a nail biter of a game between England and Germany yesterday, so exciting to watch!  Kudos to England for winning it!  I'm sure big parties continue today.   I did feel sorry for the German side - the look of disappointment, but somebody has to win, and England have waited so long.Watching the match got me wondering, how many people track Football (soccer) on Strava?  I know I do... and, I've tried it 2 waysRecord as a run: I do this because I like to know how far I've run at the end, but it creates a 'mess' of a map, and also skews my running totalsRecord as cardio: gives me a better 'relative effort' score, but doesn't track the distance.Anybody else record activities like this?  What methods do you do?  Maybe this is something I should put in as a feature request?

Traveling overseas.

I live in NZ and will be in Brisbane/Gold Coast for a week. Do I have to do anything to my account so that my Fenix6X Pro and Strava will "talk" with each other! Or does it just stay the same?

Still some bugs for local legend

Hello,updates for local lengend are not made automaticaly. by going to the segment page, the update is made, so it's better than at the start of the problem a few weeks ago.but the update is not made in one case : when nobody is local legend before i do the segment. for example : in this activity https://www.strava.com/activities/7659763885 i do the segment https://www.strava.com/segments/21560708 in the segment page, it's say nothing about local legend. same thing in https://www.strava.com/segments/21560708/local-legendsame probleme in this activity https://www.strava.com/activities/7649876080 for the segment https://www.strava.com/segments/4580916 after the activiity, it's say no local legend. i do again this segment in today activity https://www.strava.com/activities/7682580797 after today activity, the update has been made with the correct number : 2. so the system can say a user is the local legend when nobody was local legend, but that should happen after the first attempt, not t

Greetings from Down Under

Hello Team Strava, I am in Melbourne, Australia and have often thought we live in one of the best bike riding locations imaginable, especially for road bikes. Apart from our Beach Rd and the Yarra Boulevard which are favoured by road bikes, there are also about 2000km of dedicated bike paths, hills to climb at the edge of our city in the Dandenongs for both gravel and MTB and even single track around the Yarra River and other parks, and a dedicated MTB course at Lysterfield. I also rate Adelaide as a brilliant place to ride, especially with the Adelaide Hills only 15 or 20 minutes away from the CBD but I was wondering where else in the world people think are fabulous for riding? Where is the all 'round cycling capital of the world you think?

Strange Activity data ?

I have completed quite a lot of bike Segments in my local area (over 5,000) and I'm quite familiar with the Segment leaderboards.  If I attempt a new Segment I often look at the leaderboard and see familiar names of keen local cyclists.  If I see a name I don't know or a big performance gap between the top 2 on the leaderboard I may look at the Activity of the KOM-holder in case of anomalies - if I see obvious use of a vehicle (such an Activity mostly at 10 mph followed by stationary for 5 mins followed by the last mile at 50 mph) then I may comment on the Activity to request the athlete trim their data.  If there's no response I may flag the Activity as "in a vehicle" in an effort to maintain integrity of the leaderboards.     Today I saw something strange - I tried a few new Segments and saw a new name who had the KOM for about 4 of them.  Their profile was "open" and I could see they had only done 2 Activities (on consecutive days in 2019).  F

Tour Divide 2022 and riding home through Uvalde and Santa Fe, Texas

Hello Strava Community,I am a long time Strava member (2009) with almost 269,000 miles on Strava. I love seeing other people's rides, adventures, and races. And I also love sharing my stories with everyone on Strava.My most recent adventure was successfully completing the 2,700 mile Tour Divide bikepacking race in 11th place and then attempting to ride home another 1,800 miles to Alabama - spoiler alert - I made it 1000 miles across Texas and then another 300 miles across the Mississippi River in Louisiana, but I ran out of time and had to take the train the final 500 miles home from New Orleans.Both the race and my ride home were amazing. The snow covered Rocky Mountains in Canada (see pic above I took about 40 miles into the first day of the race) and Montana were like nothing I had ever had to ride through before ... so much snow that an SUV had been abandoned and left buried in the snow up to its hood on our course. This meant there were a lot of hike-a-bike through the snow,

Removing Some of my Segments from the Leaderboard

I did the Haleakala climb back in April. After reaching the summit and returning to the visitor center parking lot I realized a few things fell out of my jersey. I hopped in the SAG car my girlfriend was driving to go back up (twice) and forgot to stop my Garmin. Those 2 trips have segments showing up on the leaderbord that i've been trying to remove with zero luck. Someone flagged the entire activity instead of just those segments, Ive now been able to unflag the activity but not the segments......please help

Looking for good endurance (cycling) training material

Just attempted a rather difficult Tour des Stations Ultrafondo event (242KM/8848M). Missed the second time check by 7 minutes and got elimihated. Not alone, only 326 of 680 participants completed and only 7 of 21 in the 60+ age group.I trained and trained but still came up short. They really shouldn't label it a 'Fondo' event as it's really more a race. The time checks are the same for everyone, regardless of age. I wish there were age specific time checks.No more whining. I'm wondering if anyone knows good training material (video ideally) for long endurance events. If I ever hope to compete I will have to fight my age and up my game.

Hi from colorful Colorado! Here's how Strava has helped me.

Hey everyone, I'm Eric from Colorado. I've been using Strava since 2013 and it has been an integral part of my athletic life. These are the areas where I feel I've benefited the most...1) Motivation. This tool has been a huge motivator in my training. Keeping track of PRs, chasing KOMs, improving on previous attempts. Segments motivate me a whole lot more than doing "intervals".2) Inspiration. I've found great ideas of places to ride, run, and activities to try by seeing what other people are doing. I can go anywhere in the world and find cool places instantly, or find places in my own area that I didn't know about. 3) Creative outlet. In addition to being a training log where I can write and journal about my daily activities, I enjoy posting pictures from those activities. As an artist that doesn't do art for a living, I often don't find much time for art. Strava gives me a platform to find and share something beautiful every day (even though it's "just" a snap from my iphon
